SWPS University has been building its leading position among higher education institutions in Poland on two pillars: education and research. The University’s research centers and laboratories conduct numerous research projects, which have impact on various aspects of economy and social policy.

The University’s Research and Development Fund supports development of new research centers, which are equpped with specialized equipment, Including interview rooms with one-way mirrors, audio-visual recording equipment, eye-trackers, electroencephalographs, galvanometers and electromyographs.

ACADEMIC CENTER FOR SOCIO-EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION (AKCES)

The center aims to implement lasting positive change in teaching of mathematics in schools by using information technology in the teaching process. Currently, the center is working on two projects, supported by grants from the Operational Program Human Capital, including: An Innovative Math Program for Secondary Schools, An Innovative Math Program for Middle Schools, and one project supported by a grant from the Stipend and Training Fund (FSS) - Educational Challenges in the Internet Age: Support for the Leaders of the Implementation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Schools.

BEHAVIORAL ECONOMICS RESEARCH GROUP

The goal of the Behavioral Economics Research Group at SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities is to advance current knowledge about human behavioral and cognitive processes and their underlying neural mechanisms, in the economic context. Our group is open to conducting collaborative projects. CENTER FOR BEHAVIORAL ECONOMICS

Centre for Behavioral Economics conducts research projects in the field of economic psychology and behavioral economics. The researchers study various aspects of human economic behavior, for example: decision making, perception of financial risk, and entrepreneurial behaviors. They also specialize in neuroeconomics and psychology of leadership. The Center cooperates with researchers around the world as well as business organizations, associations of individual investors, and financial analysts and managers.

CENTER FOR APPLIED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH RESEARCH

The Center for Applied Behavioral Health Research studies psycho-social factors influencing health oriented behaviors. The researchers at the Center aim to improve the quality of life of individuals with health problems. They help people with various health conditions to adjust to the new reality of life. The researchers focus on modifiable aspects of behaviour, such as skills, social networking, and beliefs.

CENTER FOR EAST ASIAN CIVILIZATION

Centre for East-Asian Civilizations studies the ideological, political and spiritual tradition of East-Asian cultures as well as contemporary changes happening in the region. The Center organizes conferences, scientific seminars, and lectures focused on topics pertaining to East-Asian culture. Its professional publication, Azja-Pacyfik: Społeczeństwo-Polityka-Gospodarka [Asia-Pacific: Society-Politics-Economy], is the only interdisciplinary journal devoted to contemporary issues of the region.

CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF DEMOCRACY

Center for the Study of Democracy focuses on theory and models of democracy. It researches citizen participation in democratic and political processes, assesses the quality of democracy in Poland, observes social and political movements, and studies political views and attitudes. The Center cooperations with other Polish and international research centers. The research findings collected by the Center do not merely enrich the body of knowledge, but they also identify good practices, which have positive impact on the public sphere.

CENTER FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES

The Center for Psychological Assessment Techniques develops psychological tests and questionnaires used in the process of psychological diagnosis and assessment. It also provides information on diagnostic techniques available in Poland and helps psychologists to develop their own assessment tools. Additionally, it facilitates communication with authors of various diagnostic techniques and advises on the publication process for new assessment tools.

EEG LABORATORY

The EEG Laboratory allows researchers to conduct interdisciplinary studies, which require the use of an electroencephalogram. The Lab offers three 64-channel electroencephalograms, one with hydro-cell electrodes and two with solid-gel electrodes. Researchers may also use an eye-tracking equipment in combination with the EEG and eye-tracking tests.

The Experimental Research Laboratory in Sopot provides consulting support to researchers and students. It also offers laboratory facilities with professional computer applications, which enable researchers to develop research projects, conduct research experiments and analyse research findings.

The Experimental Research Laboratory in Warsaw offers individual research stations with stationary and tablet computers, equipped with professional applications, such as E-Prime and Inquisit. E-Prime facilitates computerized experiment design, data collection, and analysis. Iquisit enables a collection of precision psychometrics for cognitive and neurophysiological research.

EYE TRACKING LABORATORY

The Eye Tracking Laboratory at SWPS University conducts research in partnership with the Eye Tracking Laboratory at Clemson University, South Carolina in the United States. The Lab is equipped with several professional eye-trackers, which allows researchers to take advantage of the latest research technology.
Additionally, the Lab serves as a learning center for eye-tracking research methods.

INSTITUTE OF RESEARCH ON PUBLIC SPACE

The Institute of Research on Public Space was created as joint initiative of SWPS University and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. The Institute conducts multidimensional and interdisciplinary analysis of urban public spaces. The researchers are interested in all aspects of social activity in a broadly defined public space, which includes not only urban streets, parks and public buildings, but also the area of social communication, media, discourse, art and authorities that are in charge of the public domain.

INTERDISCIPLINARY CENTER FOR APPLIED COGNITIVE STUDIES

The Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Cognitive Studies conducts research on cognitive functions such as attention, inhibition, working memory and higher-level cognitive processes (reasoning and decision-making). The main areas of researcher include cognitive psychopathology, cognitive aging, and social cognition.

PERIPHERAL PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY LABORATORY

The Peripheral Psychophysiology Laboratory researches psychophysiological correlation between cognitive processes, such as memory, focus, decision making and motivational affective processes, incluidng pain, gratification, and risk avoidance. The Lab provides biofeedback equipment, which enables the measurement of psychophysiological reactions such as heart function, breathing, muscle activity, and skin temperature.

PSYCHOLOGICAL LABORATORY

The Psychological Laboratory in Poznań is equipped with a psycho-galvanometer, an eye-tracker, and computer stations with professional software, such as E-Prime, Inquisit, Atals.ti, and SPPS. These tools help researchers to design and conduct psychological tests, generate various visual and auditory stimuli, measure reaction times of the subject to the stimuli, and to conduct preliminary statistical analyzes of the results.

THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR COMPLEXITY AND CONFLICT

The Centre for Complexity and Conflict at SWPS University partners with the International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution at Columbia University in the United States. The Center is dedicated to applications of complexity science to the study of conflict. TRAUMA AND CRISIS RESEARCH CENTER

Traumatic life events cause pain and suffering and may prompt psychological distress, depression, apathy, and anxiety attacks, but they also may lead to a deeper appreciation of life, spiritual development, and a change in the fundamental outlook on the world and oneself. Researchers at the Trauma and Crisis Research Center develop and verify effective psychotherapy techniques and psychological support for people, who have experienced traumatic events such as disasters, tragic accidents, terminal or serious illness or a loss of a loved one.

YOUTH ResearcH Center

Youth Research Center conducts interdisciplinary research into the behaviors and habits of youth at various stages of life and professional activity. Researchers study the key aspect of adolescent life, including addictions, entry into the workforce, political behaviors and parenting in the digital age. The Center focuses on social, cognitive and emotional skills of teenagers and works towards strategies that help young people face the challenges of modern life.
