The aim of the project is to investigate political knowledge in Poland, and its importance for the Polish political system. We want to check how knowledgeable/ignorant Poles are about politics, and whether it at all matters for Polish democracy.

Research Objectives

Our hypotheses relate to several areas. The first group concerns the ontological status of political knowledge in Poland. We put forward two hypotheses. In the first we hypothesise that political knowledge is a homogeneous, although syndromatic phenomenon. In the second we hypothesise that political knowledge is a heterogeneous, multidimensional phenomenon.

The second group of hypotheses relate to the current situation in Poland. We expect that nowadays political knowledge in Poland is rather low, and its levels differ between groups.

The third group of hypotheses concerns the dynamics of political knowledge in Poland. We expect that political knowledge in the postcommunist period has increased (mainly due to intensive education), and existing differences between social groups (in political knowledge) have deepened.

The fourth group of hypotheses concerns the effects of political knowledge in Poland. We expect that political knowledge is a strong correlate of political participation, it is an important determinant of satisfaction with democracy, and it is a strong correlate of political efficacy.
