FACUTLY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

 

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers programs of study in several disciplines. Our graduates include translators, teachers of foreign languages, journalists, sociologists, culture experts and specialists in cooperation with East Asia. Our unique programs of study, combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills, have been recognized by the Polish Accreditation Committee (PKA), the only statutory body in Poland responsible for assessment of quality of education provided by higher education institutions, and by employers.

Education

SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities is ranked among the top four universities, offering programs of study in the field of Social Sciences in Poland. The Cultural Studies program, as the only program of its kind, has received the highest rating by the Polish Accreditation Committee. Moreover, our East Asia Studies are unique across Europe. The Journalism Program has been created by the leading media experts and journalists in the country. Our language studies include English, Spanish, Italian, Swedish and Norwegian. Students of the language programs have an opportunity to learn from an international team of linguists, translators and methodology experts. Programs of study »

Focus on Practical Skills

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences provides an excellent environment for development of practical skills. Future translators learn their craft with the use of modern technologies, such as Computer Assisted Translation programs and a simultaneous translation lab. Students of Scandinavian languages sit the official Swedish proficiency tests, such as TISUS and SWEDEX.

Additionally, the Department of East Asia Studies offers a vast library of texts and multimedia on Asian history, politics and culture. Journalism students have a chance to learn from the leading journalists in the country. The students of Cultural Studies have an opportunity to publish in Kultura Popularna [Popular Culture], an influential professional magazine, and to conduct research and manage a variety of projects under the guidance of external experts in the field.

Best Cultural Studies in Poland

Our Cultural Studies program, as the only one of its kind, has received the highest rating by the Polish Accreditation Committee (PKA), the statutory body responsible for assessment of quality of education provided by higher education institutions. The faculty has received excellent scores in seven out of eight categories in the PKA assessment. It was the first highest score granted to a Cultural Studies program in the history of PKA. More information

External Assessment and Accreditation 

In 2013, our Language Studies received a positive rating from the Polish Accreditation Committee (PKA). The Committee especially appreciated the practical focus of the Language Program. The Sociology Program also received a positive ranking from PKA, in 2004 and in 2007. More information » 

Best Specialists 

The academic staff at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences includes renowned specialists in the field: Professor Wojciech Burszta - anthropologist, Professors Wiesław Godzic - film and media expert, Professor Tadeusz Rachwał - author of many publications on culture and literature in English, Associate Professor Witold Maciejewski, Ph.D. - linguist and Scandinavian Studies specialist, Professor Piotr Sałustowicz - social policy expert, and Krzysztof Szumski - a former Director of the Asia-Pacific Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland and a former Ambassador of Poland in Beijing.

Leader in University Rankings

According to 2015 ranking of higher education institutions by Perspektywy, a Polish influential magazine devoted to educational affairs, SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities is the best private university in Poland offering study programs in Lanuage Studies, Cultural Studies, East-Asia Studies, and Sociology.

Graduates Sought After by Employers

According to the ranking by Wprost, a weekly news and opinion magazine, SWPS University has been voted the best private higher education institution offering study programs in Social Sciences and Languages. Science and Research

The academic staff of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences includes renowned experts and specialists, who conduct numerous research projects in the field of humanities and social sciences. In 2015, the faculty conducted 98 research projects worth over 5M PLN. Additionally, the Faculty received 320,000 PLN from The Ministry of Science and Higher Education for statutory activities such as: free public lectures, panel discussions, academic publications, and research. The funds supported 88 projects.

Scientific Research Centres

Center for the Study of Democracy researches models and quality of democracy as well as civic and political engagement.

Center for East-Asian Civilizations focuses on the ideological, political and spiritual tradition of East-Asian culture as well as contemporary changes taking place in the region.

Center for the Polish Language and Culture conducts research projects in the field of linguistics.

Cross-Faculty Cooperation

Młodzi w Centrum LAB [Youth Research LAB] conducts interdisciplinary research into the behaviors and habits of young people at various stages of life and professional activity. The center focuses on social, cognitive and emotional skills of teenagers and works towards strategies helping youth to face the challenges of modern life.

Winners of the MAESTRO Competition

Two research projects, carried out by the academics from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, were awarded two of the five main prizes in the prestigious “MAESTRO” competition for experienced researchers who conduct pioneering and scientifically significant research that broadens current knowledge and may result in scientific discoveries. The competition is organized by the National Science Centre. The two winning projects include:

Międzynarodowe trybunały karne jako aktorzy reform wewnętrznych [International Crime Tribunals as Influencers of Internal Reforms] – researching how international tribunals influence societies and countries under their jurisdiction. The project was conducted by Professor Klaus Bachmann.

Wizje narodu w polskich podręcznikach do nauki histroii [National Identity in Polish History Handbooks] – a comparative anthropological research project focusing on the creation and continuation of national identity in Poland after 1989. The project was conducted by Professor Wojciech Burszta. More information »

Best Language Studies

In 2013, in an assessment of research potential, conducted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Language Studies department received the highest score among the private higher education institutions in Poland. More information »

Additionally, in a comprehensive assessment of overall academic parameters, conducted by the Ministry, the Language Studies department received the highest score, while the Cultural Studies department was ranked as second among all higher education institutions in Poland.

Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Degrees

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has the authority to grant doctoral and post-doctoral  (habilitacja) degrees in the field of Humanities, in Cultural Studies and Literary Studies and in the field of Social Sciences, in Sociology. To date, the Faculty has awarded 48 doctoral and 17 post-doctoral degrees as well as 2 Professorial titles (data as of February 1, 2016). More information »
