Andreas Maercker

Andreas Maercker, born in former East Germany behind the Iron Curtain, received a double education as psychologist and psychiatrist. His doctorates were on stress regulation (by neuropeptids) (medical) and on existential confrontation and wisdom (psychological). Before and after his appointment as professor at the University of Zurich, he conducted studies on trauma sequelae, mental disorders in older age, cultural variations of suffering. From 2011 to 2019, he chaired the WHO working group on ICD-11 developments for trauma and stress-related disorders.
