University

October marks the beginning of the academic year in Poland. All campuses of SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities will celebrate this occassion with official ceremonies.

This year, SWPS University in Warsaw will have the honor to host Professor Michael Ignatieff, Rector and President of Central European University in Budapest, who will deliver the Opening Address.

During the ceremony, SWPS University will host many distinguished guests from academia, the government, and the local municipality. Most importantly, we will be welcoming all new and returning students, who will be starting a new year of learning at our University.

Opening Address

The opening addres on Universities and Liberal Freedom in Central Europe will be delivered by Professor Michael Ignatieff.

Speaker

Professor Michael Ignatieff - university professor, writer and former politician, was born in Canada. He holds academic degrees in history from the University of Toronto and Harvard University as well as eleven honorary degrees. Known for his work as a historian, Ignatieff has held senior academic posts at the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Toronto and Harvard University. He is a member of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada. From 2008 to 2011, he was the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and the Leader of the Official Opposition.

The official inauguration of the 2017/2018 academic year at SWPS University in Wrocław will take place on October 10, 2017,at 12.00, in the W. Sterna Lecture Hall, at Ostrowskiego 30b, Wrocław.

Associate Professor Katarzyna Byrka, Dean of the Wrocław Faculty of Psychology and Associate Professor Monika Lewandowicz-Machnikowska Dean of the Faculty of Law and Communication will jointly preside over the ceremony and will welcome honorable guests and students.

The opening address titled What if potential is not enough? About determinants of creative achievements will be delivered by Associate Professor Maciej Karwowski, from the University of Wrocław.

Associate Professor Maciej Karwowski, University of Wrocław - Psychologist, interested in psychological aspects of creativity. Author of six books, including Creative Self, co-edited with J.C. Kaufman (Academic Press, 2017) and numerous articles published in international academic journals. Deputy Editor of Journal of Creative Behavior, the oldest academic journal focused on creativity research. Recipient of many awards and grants from the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Foundation for Polish Science, and Polityka, Polish weekly news magazine.

The official inauguration of the 2017/2018 academic year at SWPS University in Poznań will take place on October 18, 2017, at 13.00, in the Artis Lecture Hall, Kutrzeby 10, Poznań.

Professor Anna M. Zalewska, Dean of Poznań Faculty of Social Sciences and Design, will preside over the ceremony and will welcome honorable guests and students.

The opening address on Spiritual space. The old and the new in the contemporary architecture and interior design will be delivered by Professor Jerzy Miziołek.

Speaker

Professor Jerzy Miziołek - Art historian, specializing in the Greco-Roman classic tradition and visual communication. He is interested in the European art from the late antiquity to the contemporary times and focuses especially on the artistic culture of the Italia Renaissance and the classic tradition in Polish art. Lecturer at SWPS University and the University of Warsaw. Director of the Museum of the University of Warsaw. Author of eight books and over 130 articles published in prestigious international academic journals.

Katowice

The official inauguration of the 2017/2018 academic year at SWPS University in Katowice will take place on October 13, 2017, at 12.00, in the Main Lecture Hall, Techników 9, Katowice.

Associate Professor Katarzyna Popiołek, Dean of Katowice Faculty of Psychology, will preside over the ceremony and will welcome honorable guests and students. Additionally, everyone will have an opportunity to enjoy a performance by Ms. Agnieszka Kaczmarek-Bialic, harpist of the Silesian Philharmonic.

The opening address on Philology and John Wayne will be delivered by Professor Ryszard Koziołek, from the University of Silesia.

Speaker

Professor Ryszard Koziołek, University of Silesia - Literature expert and historian. His research interests include: theory and interpretation of modern prose, history and poetics of Polish historical novels, the works of Polish writers Teodor Parnicki and Henryk Sienkiewicz, social function of literary studies, and literary education. Author of numerous books and articles, including: Sienkiewicz’s Bodies. Studies of Gender and Violence, translated by David Malcolm (2015) and Znakowanie trawy albo praktyki filologii [Grass Marking or Philological Practices] (2011). Member of the Committee on History of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in Katowice. Four-time member of the Nike Literary Prize Jury and the Chairman of the Jury in 2015.

The official inauguration of the 2017/2018 academic year at SWPS University in Sopot will take place on November 17, 2017, at 15.30, at Polna 16/20, Sopot.

Associate Professor Aleksandra Janowska-Fila, Dean of Sopot Faculty of Psychology, will preside over the ceremony and will welcome honorable guests and students.

The opening address titled Why are we obedient? will be delivered by Professor Dariusz Doliński.

Speaker

Professor Dariusz Doliński - specializes in social psychology (mechanisms of submitting to external pressures and social manipulation), psychology of emotions and motivation as well as marketing psychology. Author of over 200 publications, including Przypisywanie moralnej odpowiedzialności [Assignment of Moral Accountability], Orientacja defensywna [Defensive Orientation], Strategie samoutrudniania [Strategies of Self-impediment], and Psychologia wpływu społecznego [Psychology of Social Influence]. Former Dean of the Wrocław Faculty of Psychology. Currently, Rector’s Representative for University Development.
