The Department of Graphic Design at SWPS University in Wrocław is inviting designers, design students, and graphic design enthusiasts to the 27th Exhibition of Applied Graphic Design. The theme of the exhibition are links between mathematics and design. The exhibition will include commercial and non-commercial works, as well as student projects. Curators behind this event are Dr. Dorota Płuchowska and Dr. Mariusz Wszołek.
The vernissage will take place on October 22, 2020. The exhibition will be open until November 5, 2020.
About the Exhibition
The story of the exhibition is not straightforward. The first edition was organized by a historian and art critic, Kazimierz Rainczak, in 1966. However, the audience had to wait another 50 years for the next edition. In 2016, Fundacja 102, a foundation whose mission is to popularize applied graphic design and typography, and to ensure their presence in public spaces, revived this project. The organizers of the 2016 edition decided to continue numbering of the exhibitions as if they were scheduled bi-annually since 1966. This was an homage to Kazimierz Rainczak and his initiative, which was interrupted by political circumstances.
This year, it is time for the 27th edition, which we has been organized thanks to the engagement of SWPS University’s Graphic Design students. The organizers want to prove that applied graphic design could not exist without mathematics, hence the main theme of this year’s edition ‒ links between mathematics and graphic design. Partially, the theme of the exhibition was inspired by the year 2019, which was designated as the Year of Mathematics in Poland.
The exhibition will be divided into 3 categories:
- commercial design
- non-commercial design
- student projects
We will present a broad range of applied graphic design projects, including posters, leaflets, badges, tickets, labels, packaging, business cards, book covers, book illustrations, books, advertising, forms, stamps, banknotes, elements of visual identification, signs, ex libris, infographics, typeface, and other elements of applied graphic design that were created post June 2018 and are related to mathematics.
