The Social Insurance Institution is a state organizational unit with a legal personality. It deals with:
- assessing and collecting social insurance and health insurance contributions,
- distributing benefits (e.g., pensions, disability, sickness or maternity benefits) in the amount and in accordance with the rules established by applicable regulations.

ZUS performs tasks in the field of social insurance and tasks of a non- insurance nature, commissioned on the basis of separate regulations.
