Paul Emmelkamp

Paul Emmelkamp has worked throughout his professional life in clinical practice as a licensed psychotherapist and clinical psychologist and has contributed to a number of areas in clinical psychology, psychopathology and psychiatry. Over the years Paul Emmelkamp has published therapy-outcome studies on adults with work-related distress, substance abuse disorders, personality disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress, anxiety disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorder; and on children and adolescents with ADHD, conduct disorder and anxiety disorders. Since 2000, he has been involved in the evaluation of psychotherapy interventions delivered through the Internet, and the development and evaluation of controlled clinical trials on virtual reality exposure therapy for anxiety disorders. His other research interests include forensic psychiatry, intimate partner violence, experimental psychopathology, attachment/parental rearing style and psychopathology.
In 1993, Paul Emmelkamp became Editor in Chief of the Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy journal. He is a recipient of a number of honours and awards, including member of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, an honorary member of the Dutch Association of Behaviour and Cognitive Therapy, and the Senior Heijmans award for his lifetime achievements from the Dutch Institute of Psychologists (NIP). In 2006, he was awarded a distinguished professorship ('academy professor') by the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2014 he was elected President of the International Association for Psychotherapy. In 2021-2022 he was a senior fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Paris, focussing on mental health of refugees.
