Politics, Society and Public Policy

The course presents a multidisciplinary approach and theories related to politics, public administration, public policy and society in Israel. Students will expand their knowledge and analytical 'tool box' related to the society and politics in Israel and beyond. At the end of this course, students will be able to ask questions and to critically examine political and social processes in Israel. They will gain deep knowledge of the social and political complexity of Israel through particular contemporary and historical events.

The course focuses on three main subjects related to Israel: Politics, Society and Public Policy.


  • The Israeli Political System and Structure
  • Jewish and Democratic? The tensions between the different conceptions of Israeli democracy
  • Current Challenges to Israeli Democracy


  • Israel's 'social map' in theory and practice
  • Jewish - Arab relations
  • Immigration to Israel
  • Ultra-Orthodox and settler Jews in Israel and in the West-Bank

Public Policy & Administration:

  • Israeli Public Administration: Development and Trends
  • Poverty and Social Policy in Israel
  • Current Trends in Education: Some Policy Examples

 Course preparation: Students will receive some reading materials before the course to familiarize themselves with the subject matter.


The course is addressed to anyone interested in the contemporary issues related to Israel and the Middle East. There are no pre-requisites. The course is free of charge as it is financed by the Erasmus+ program.
