Humantech Meetings: AI and Digital Age

Humantech Meetings: AI and Digital Age

We live in an age where Alexa and Siri manage households, our cellphones communicate with our fridges and where corporations and governments collect enormous amount of personal information about individuals. Artificial Intelligence (AI), like any technology, brings a lot of benefits, but it also carries threats. Moreover, AI has become the new source of power and the “AI race” is the new arms race between nations.

The second event in the HumanTech Meetings series, organized by SWPS University’s HumanTech Center for Social and Technological Innovation will focus on the issue of ethics in the digital age and AI outlook from the geopolitical perspective. The meeting will be hosted by Dr. Konrad Maj and the panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Michał Boni from SWPS University.

The Meeting is part of the Innovation Transformer conference organized by the HumanTech Center.

HumanTech Meetings

We live in an era of innovation, technological progress and digitalization. This current innovation drive may lead to unpredictable psychological and social outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial to establish collaborations between engineers, programmers, IT specialists and social scientists during initial phases of any new projects related to development of new technologies or services. Such collaborations may help to avoid mistakes and can support better development of new ideas.

The project is planned as a series of meetings, gathering academics and professionals from the technology sector from Poland and other countries. Each meeting will include two lectures, one delivered by a speaker from Poland and one presented by a guest from another country. The lectures will be followed by panel discussions, where panelists will represent different approaches to innovation and technology.

HumanTech Meetings is a project of SWPS University's Center for Innovation. The aim of the project is to initiate cooperation between the technology sector and social scientists to present different perspectives on phenomena such as Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, algorithms, robotics as well as virtual and augmented reality.

Lectures - Part 2

16:00 - 18:15

Lecture 1: When sovereignty and autonomy are at stake – reflections on ethics in the digital age

States feel that their sovereignty is threatened by a combination of rising international tensions and disruptive transformation throughout economy and society driven by digital technologies. These technologies bring much good, for society at large and for individual development and personal autonomy. They also bring much bad through cyberattacks, cybercrime and state- or commercial mass-surveillance. At the sharp edge of these developments are emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, 5G and Internet of Things. How can we understand – and perhaps resolve - the good and the bad, the ethical dilemmas that play out at this nexus of technology, state and individual?

Paul Timmers

Paul Timmers, Ph.D. – Visiting fellow at the University of Oxford. His recent research is on cybersecurity, strategic autonomy and sovereignty. He is also visiting professor at Rijeka University, Senior Advisor to the European Policy Center, Chief Adviser to the European Institute of Technology/Health, and Supervisory Board member of the eGovernance Academy in Estonia. He holds a PhD in physics from Nijmegen University in the Netherlands, an MBA from Warwick University in the UK, was awarded an EU fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill and completed executive cybersecurity education at Harvard.

Lecture 2: AI horizons from the geopolitical perspective

The presentation will address major emerging and upcoming trends in artificial intelligence and machine learning from the geopolitical perspective and in the context of the so called “AI race”. The future implementation of AI is challenged by technological and social limitations. Data may not be the ultimate source of competitive advantage in the future and a lot may depend on thinking one step ahead of current paradigms. The presentation will discuss whether the AI race is a proper way of thinking about AI rollout and whether we can overcome this logic in the coming years.
