Krzysztof Puławski

Profile

Krzysztof Puławski, Ph.D., is an English Studies scholar and translator, currently holding the position of Assistant Professor at the University of Białystok. His research encompasses many aspects of translation studies, with a special focus on literary translation—specifically poetry—as explored in his monograph, Stworzone w przekładzie. Opowieść o tłumaczeniu poezji (Created in Translation: A Story of Translating Poetry). He also investigates non-standard variants of the English language, particularly Hiberno-English.

He has translated over one hundred works of prose fiction from English to Polish, including books by authors such as David Lodge, Tracy Chevalier, Raymond Carver, Flann O’Brien, Michael Ondaatje, Bruce Chatwin, E. L. Doctorow, and Joe Biden. Additionally, his translation work includes the poetry of William Blake and W.B. Yeats, as well as dozens of dramatic works by playwrights like Andrew Bovell, Jordan Tannahill, Max Posner, and Jez Butterworth. He has also translated song lyrics by writers including Michael Flanders and Tom Lehrer.

Beyond his translation work, he is also a successful playwright and author. He has written several plays, three of which were published in the prestigious Polish journal Dialog (Issues 4/2005, 4/2008, 7-8/2016) — he remains a regular collaborator of the journal. His original works also include the poetry collection Martwiątka (Białostocka Kolekcja Filologiczna, 2017), which was nominated for the Wiesław Kazanecki Literary Award in 2018, and two works of prose: Mikołajek w szkole Dobrej Zmiany (Mikołajek in the School of Good Change) and Pan Walczyk w mieście B (Mr Walczyk in City B) (both published by Pewne Wydawnictwo, Kielce, 2019, 2021).
