Maternal gatekeeping is a set of beliefs and behaviors of some mothers that prevents the other parent and other family members from engaging in childcare and parenting, by means of criticizing, controlling, micromanaging, and “claiming” the childcare sphere for themselves. Researchers from SWPS University will adapt professional research tools for the investigation of this phenomenon for the Polish environment, and will carry out a pilot study that will contribute to the body of knowledge on parenting.
The project is funded by the National Science Center, project no.: 2023/07/X/HS6/00528.
Project Objectives
The there main objectives of our project are as follows:
- To develop Polish versions of two questionnaires for the measurement of the maternal gatekeeping phenomenon.
- To investigate whether the phenomenon of maternal gatekeeping occurs only among mothers. Can we also talk about paternal gatekeeping?
- To verify the preliminary hypotheses concerning correlation between the gatekeeping beliefs and behaviors and the development of parental identity in mothers and fathers.
I hope that this project will enable further development of research on parenthood in Poland, and that it will bring us closer to the understanding of factors which support and impede men and women in fulfilling their parental roles.

Methodology
We will conducts two studies with the participation of mothers and fathers of small children. We will use questionnaires to collect data.
The first study will allow us to verify the properties of the previously developed Polish adaptations of tools for the measurement of maternal gatekeeping phenomenon.
For the second study, we will invite couples – parents of small children to answer the questionnaires. This will enable us to analyze the correlation between the gatekeeping beliefs and behaviors and functioning of each of the parents separately.
Practical application of results
We will develop a Polish version of the questionnaire for the measurement of the maternal gatekeeping phenomenon, and will adjust the tool to carry out research concerning fathers.
Having access to a professional tool will significantly increase the ability to conduct research in this area by other researchers in Poland.
Moreover, the analysis of the correlation between the maternal gatekeeping phenomenon and other aspects of parenting may be helpful in designing further studies. Such analysis will also be helpful to professionals who work with parents, because the results will indicate how the couples’ relationship is impacted by their functioning in the parental roles.
