Institute of Psychology

The Institute is responsible for the coordination and evaluation of research projects carried out by researchers and teaching-researchers employed at all Faculties of Psychology at SWPS University. The Institute has the power to grant doctoral and post-doctoral degrees (habilitacja) in the discipline of psychology.

The goal of the Behavioral Neuroscience Lab is to contribute scientific findings to the field of neuroscience. We conduct basic research on perception, emotion regulation, empathic response, affective and cognitive perspective-taking, sensory processing (especially pain), and states of consciousness. We are interested in physiological mechanisms of the researched behaviors, including the genetic, physiological, and neurological brain organization.

Due to changes in the ”Law on higher education and science” and the introduction of evaluation of science disciplines at the university level, the Institute is also responsible for the coordination and evaluation of research projects conducted by researchers and teaching-researchers employed at all Faculties of Psychology at SWPS University.

Thanks to the funding provided by the National Science Centre, the Foundation for Polish Science, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and European funds, our researchers conduct studies in the disciplines of social psychology, economic psychology, clinical psychology, neuropsychology, and health psychology.

Our research results find applications in various areas of the economy and improve the quality of life of individuals and communities. For example, our HumanTech Center for Social and Technological Innovation analyzes the latest social and technological trends, organizes meetings and initiates joint projects with business partners, NGOs, and public administration stakeholders.

It is estimated that almost 10 percent of general population suffers from depression, but not everyone has access to effective treatments. Nowadays, depression is treated primarily with pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. The effectiveness of these treatments is mainly dependant on patients’ motivation and engagement in the process of healing. Therefore, research into new and more effective ways of treatment is necessary. The research project led by Izabela Krejtz, Ph.D. will study the effectiveness of attention bias modification trainings in treating depressive disorders.

An attempt to understand emotional responses and a nature of determined temperament dates back to the Ancient Greece. Modern science applies many research methods for studies of emotional behaviors, including simple psychophysical measurements, the use of electrophysiology and the latest discoveries in molecular genetics and neuroimaging. The prompts most often used in this type of research are visual and static affective stimuli e.g. pictures (e.g. International Affective Picture System (IAPS) database, Lang database and others, 2001) or word databases (e.g. Nencki Affective Word List, Riegel word database and others, 2015). Cannabis (also known as marijuana) is among the most frequently used psychoactive substances in the world. Moreover, approximately 40 percent of all cannabis users is also addicted to tobacco. Research indicates that long-term cannabis or tobacco use affects the brain and cognitive functions such as memory, attention, speech, perception, and more complex processes like abstract thinking. Just at a quick glance, people not only can identify others, but they also can deduce other person’s intentions or even personality traits. For over 20 years, the discussion on conceptualization approaches to the topic of compulsive sexual behaviors (CSB) has not been resolved. Our previous studies led to the identification of key neuronal mechanisms underlying CSB in men, and have proposed a conceptualization, which will be included in the future classifications of mental disorders. However, almost all the existing data concerning CSB apply to men. The noticeable lack of empirical research on uncontrollable sexual behaviors in women needs rapid attention, especially that our initial studies indicate significant clinical differences between women and men in this regard.

These videos and the worrying global numbers of coronavirus infections and deaths made people listen and follow suit. But for how long? Many countries are now easing up pandemic restrictions. Schema therapy is one of the most rapidly growing and promising cognitive-behavioral therapy directions that has been developed to help patients overcome their maladaptive psychological functioning that originates in aversive childhood experiences. The main goal of the schema therapy is to change these childhood-related emotions and beliefs related to the aversive experiences in order to stop maladaptive feelings, thoughts and behaviors. The brain is human body’s central command system. Just as a computer, it has a working and operational memory and it archives some information for long periods of time. The older we get, the less reliable our memory becomes. Understanding the mechanisms of this process is socially significant these days when many societies are getting older and older. Therefore, a team of neuroscientists form SWPS University and biomedical engineers form the University of Warsaw, led by Associate Professor Aneta Brzezicka from SWPS University, will study changes in short term memory in people over time and the role of the fronto-parietal network activity on the memory capacity.

Procrastination is a self-regulation failure in which people delay some actions despite knowing that their behavior will lead to discomfort. It is estimated to affect 15-20% of population. Procrastination leads to a significant decrease of performance, life satisfaction and quality of life. The proposed project will help to gain a deeper understanding of interactions between negative emotions and executive dysfunctions in procrastination and to explore how this interaction is influenced by impulsivity and emotion regulation abilities.

Every year on January 1st, thousands of people make New Year’s resolutions related to their lifestyles. People mass enroll in fitness clubs and gyms, buy kitchen appliances for making healthy meals and cocktails, and quit smoking. However, usually the zeal wanes after a few weeks and the majority of people return to their previous habits and the not so healthy lifestyles. Researchers from SWPS University will examine whether having a partner, who supports and actively participates in pro-health changes can boost perseverance and staying the course on the way to better health.

The word ‘possession’ relates to change in behavior and the sense of identity, attributed to supernatural forces. The ‘possessed’ often seek help from exorcists to take back control of their lives. Nevertheless, the reason for the irratic behavior can be a result of traumatic experience, including emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Thus, the question arises – do 'possessed' need spiritual or psychological help? Researchers from SWPS University will conduct psychological assessments of people who report being ‘possessed’, in order to compile a systematic descriptoin of the phenomena, the accompanying symptoms and the strategies people use to regain a sense of control over their behavior.

Hedonism and eudaimonism are two philosophical traditions concerning happiness. Hedonism equates happinness with pleasure and enjoyment. Social distortions in comparative judgments may lead to the categorization of people and divisions and thus to depreciation of their values. The research project relates to the phenomenon known as Self-humanization (tendency to view themselves as more human than others). The planned study (also in cross cultural context) shall verify alternative interpretation of this phenomenon. Positive verification of the assumptions may have significant and original contribution to the ongoing discussion on the nature of the comparative judgments in the context of cross-cultural differences.
