Profile

Dr. Anna Dżabagina is a literary scholar and cultural historian, her research focuses on the history of women's literature and culture from the 19th century to the present, with a particular emphasis on lesbian literature and culture. Her academic interests include queer history, transnational modernism, life writing, and (auto)biographical studies. She specializes in the scholarly editing of literary and source texts.

Research interests

Her latest research projects include:

  • "Sapphic Modernism in Women’s Writings in the Areas of the Russian Empire (Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian Literature)": project funded the National Science Center (NCN) and conducted at the University of Warsaw (2021-2025). Role: principal investigator.
  • "The Polish-German Work and Reception of Eleonora Kalkowska (1883-1937)": project funded by Diamond Grant provided by Poland’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education and conducted at the University of Warsaw. Role: principal investigator.

Publications

  • Monograph: She is the author of the monograph Kalkowska. Biogeografia [Kalkowska. Biogeography].
  • Scholarly Book Editing: She has edited and written introductions for the critical editions of Hanna Nałkowska's Dzienniki czasu żałoby 1942–1945 [Journals from the Time of Mourning 1942–1945] and Eleonora Kalkowska's Głód życia [Hunger for Life].
  • Articles: She published in numerous academic journals, including Teksty Drugie, Pamiętnik Literacki, and Aspasia: The International Yearbook of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern European Women's and Gender History.
  • Current Book Projects: She is currently working on a queer biography of Narcyza Żmichowska, to be published by Wydawnictwo Krytyki Politycznej, as well as an English-language monograph on the transnational history of sapphic modernism in the region.

  • French Research Center in Humanities and Social Sciences (CEFRES) Postdoctoral Fellowship in Prague
Nominations
  • Poznań Literary Prize Finalist: Finalist in the Stanisław Barańczak Award and Scholarship category, which recognizes authors under 35 for a significant, innovative body of work in literature, the humanities, or the promotion of literary culture.
  • Gender Book of the Year Nomination: Her book, Kalkowska. Biogeografia [Kalkowska. Biogeography], was nominated for the 2020 Gender Book of the Year, an award presented by the Polish Gender Studies Association.

Teaching

  • At SWPS University, she teaches courses in fiction, popular literature, the analysis and interpretation of cultural texts, academic writing, emancipatory theories and strategies, counterculture, and 21st-century challenges in the humanities.
  • She also lectures for the postgraduate Gender Studies program at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBL PAN) and in the "Gender and Sexuality" master's program at the University of Warsaw.

Other professional engagement

  • She is a cofounder and member of the program board of QueerMuzeum Warszawa [Queer Museum Warsaw].
  • She is an active member of the Research Laboratory on LGBTQ+ History and Identities at the University of Warsaw.
