Selection Criteria and Methodology
The World’s Top 2% Scientists ranking is compiled by researchers at Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier, using data from the Scopus database. Evaluating scientific impact through standardized bibliometric criteria, the ranking generates two separate lists: one measuring career-long achievement and the other focusing strictly on citation activity from the most recent calendar year. The underlying analysis incorporates metrics such as the h-index, total citation count—evaluated both with and without self-citations—and authorship position. These parameters are synthesized into a composite score (c-score), which serves as the primary metric for identifying the top 2% of scholars worldwide.
Scholars are categorized across 22 main scientific fields and 174 subfields following the standard Science-Metrix taxonomy. The list encompasses the top 100,000 most cited researchers globally, alongside those ranking in the top 2% of their specific subfields.
Two Complementary Benchmarks
The ranking is published annually as two separate lists: one evaluating cumulative career achievement from the start of an academic career, and the other focusing strictly on output and citation impact from the previous calendar year. The presence of SWPS University researchers on these lists highlights the growing significance of the scientific studies conducted at our institution.
