A researcher from SWPS University will investigate cross-cultural challenges and obstacles that Polish and Japanese entrepreneurs and companies face in establishing and carrying out mutual cooperation.
The project is financed by the Center for Research on the Economics of Memorial Sites, project number 2023/07/X/HS4/00355.
Project objectives
The main goal of this preliminary study is to fill the gap in the existing literature, which relates to identification of challenges occurring during the implementation phase of Polish-Japanese projects in the international business (IB) environment, and to explain why Japan ranks at the distant 39th place as the recipient of Polish exports. The specific goal is to conduct in-depth interviews, in Poland, with Polish and Japanese entrepreneurs, and local government officials, to learn about problems and challenges in the implementation of bilateral projects, and to create a questionnaire for further research.
There are many myths surrounding Japanese business culture. Polish entrepreneurs investigate the best way to hand out business cards in Japan or how deep they should bow while greeting their business partners, meanwhile they are missing an important issue of differences between the Polish and Japanese approach to project management. This results in many misunderstandings and obstacles when implementing joint projects. Therefore, the main goal of this study is to analyze methods of managing international teams, using the example of Poland and Japan.

Methodology
The respondents will be recruited from the following three groups:
- Polish entrepreneurs who managed to carry out business initiatives on the Japanese market
- Japanese entrepreneurs operating on the Polish market, and representatives of Japanese corporations in Poland
- Representatives of the local government.
According to the case study analysis method, first we will conduct screening and initial consultations online to identify people for direct interviews, and then carry out in-depth interviews and observation with the selected participants. During the in-depth interviews we will ask the following questions:
- What are the greatest opportunities and obstacles that individual Japanese managers face in establishing new companies on the Polish market?
- What are the biggest opportunities and obstacles that Polish small and medium-sized companies, and local governments, face in their cooperation with Japan?
Practical applications of results
The study will help to determine the main challenges and obstacles that Japanese managers face in establishing new companies on the Polish market, and identify opportunities and challenges that Polish small and medium companies, and local governments, experience while cooperating with Japan. The collected data will provide a foundation for the development of a questionnaire that could be used in further research.
