In June, Monika Kornacka, Ph.D., Head of the Emotion Cognition Lab at SWPS University, had a wonderful opportunity to visit the Joint Research Centre (JRC), a key research hub of the European Commission, located in Ispra, Italy. The visit, organized by Poland’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the National Centre for Research and Development, Poland (NCBR), provided young Polish researchers with an opportunity to see how science contributes to evidence-informed policymaking.
EU's Joint Research Center in Italy
The European Commissions’ Joint Research Center provides independent, evidence-based knowledge and science, supporting EU policies to positively impact society. Scientists at the JRC carry out research in various fields to provide independent advice to EU policymakers and put science at the heart of European policies.

Monika Kornacka, Ph.D. from USWPS at JRC in Istra, Italy
One of the key initiatives of JRC is the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Knowledge Gateway — a reference point for public health policy makers with reliable, independent and up-to date information on topics related to promotion of health and well-being.
I would like to special thank Elaine van Rijn, Ph.D., for hosting me at the Disease Prevention Unit and for an incredibly inspiring discussion on the promotion of mental health and prevention of mental health disorders. Gratitude also goes to the JRC Water Lab that provided us with an opportunity to better understand how chemical science can contribute to improving mental health, and to the staff of the Scientific Development Programme for an interesting discussion on the role of virtual worlds in mental health. Last but not least, I would like to sincerely thank Sonia and Ben from the European Commission who tirelessly facilitated the whole event. It was truly wonderful to connect with the other Polish researchers at JRC and engage in such a valuable interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge.
