Museums and memorial sites of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camps play an important role as elements of historical education and a warning against horrific crimes committed by totalitarian regimes. However, for the warning to be loud and clear, these sites must be preserved must function and fulfill their educational role. To safeguard the crucial social values, memorial sites require significant resources. The majority of memorial sites face considerable financial and organizational difficulties, although some of them fulfill their social mission very effectively and develop best management, fundraising, and commemoration standards.

Museums and memorial sites of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camps play an important role as elements of historical education and as a warning against horrific crimes committed by totalitarian regimes. To safeguard the crucial social values, memorial sites require significant resources. The majority of institutionalized memorial sites face considerable financial and organizational difficulties, although some of them fulfill their social mission very effectively and develop best management, fundraising, and commemoration standards.
Project Objectives
The project aims to identify and analyze key factors determining the achievement of strategic goals of museums and memorial sites of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camps with particular emphasis on the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim, and to formulate development strategies with the application of SWOT/TOWS analysis with particular emphasis on the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim.
Research Plan
General plan of this project includes the following steps combined with the use of specific scientific methods:
- development of the strategic diagnostic tool for sector analysis
- identification and analysis of macro environment factors with PESTEL and scenario method
- identification and analysis of micro environment factors with Porter's five forces analysis and sector scoring
- identification and analysis of internal factors of examined museums and memorial sites with the use of the strategic balance sheet method and by listing key success factors
- classification of factors that impact the strategic position of museums and memorial sites by using SWOT analysis
- calculating the impact force of particular factors on the strategic position of the researched institutions with the application of TOWS analysis
- defining the strategic position and directions of development for the researched museums and memorial sites
- recommendations for improvements in state policies based on empirically defined catalogues of good practices from the sector.
The results of the project will be used to develop tools for international comparative studies on determinants and strategies of effectiveness of institutionalized memorial sites related to the Nazi German camp system in Europe.

Project Results and Beneficiaries
The project will be concluded with the final report including identification and analysis of the key factors determining the achievement of strategic goals of the researched museums and memorial sites of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camps and development strategies with particular emphasis on the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim. The target beneficiaries are the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, researchers, memorial museums organized/co-led by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and memorial museums organized by local government.

The project is conducted by the Center for Research on the Economics of Memorial Sites, at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
