In today’s economy, companies that know how to attract and keep well qualified employees are the most successful. The task of finding the best talent with great potential is a huge challenge. To find the right people, employers increasingly look for help from various technologies based on current psychological research. MatchBeta, an artificial intelligence system, created by the consulting company PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), in collaboration with HumanTech Center for Social and Technological Innovation at SWPS University, is a tool that answers the needs of employers and candidates.
The MatchBeta project is a social innovation, which on the one hand will support employers in finding the right talent for their companies and on the other hand will support young people in finding suitable career paths. The heart of MatchBeta is an artificial intelligence system called M.A.I.A. (Matching Artificial Intelligence Assistant), which was created by PwC Data Analytics team in collaboration with the HumanTech Center for Social and Technological Innovation at SWPS University.
Current Job Market
“In the past few years, the job market has undergone a significant evolution. Due to the digital transformation, many new professions have been created. At the same time, the millennials generation, which is much more demanding with respect to their job expectations and the form of employment they are willing to accept, constitutes close to 50% of the global work force. In this situation, employers must adjust to the new realities of the job market, because the old recruitment methods are no longer effective", says Adam Krasoń, President of PwC.
"The MatchBeta project is an answer to the growing need for bringing together employers and potential employees, by matching their competencies and expectations, at the first stage of the relationship. In this case, recruiters can support their experience and intuition with an artificial intelligence system, which provides precise information. For young candidates, it translates into an increased job satisfaction and an easier adjustment at the new company. At the same time, employers gain motivated and well qualified employees, who enjoy coming to work", explains Ewa Zmysłowska, Director of Human Resources at PwC.
Matching Artificial Intelligence Assistant (M.A.I.A.)
The M.A.I.A. system is based on specialised tests developed by experts from the HumanTech Center for Social and Technological Innovation at SWPS University. During the MatchBeta Project, the tests will be completed by experienced employees, employers, and by students. Respondents will answer various questions, for example related to their preferred work environment or interests.
"The development of a true psychological test, as opposed to a quiz, is a laborious and multi-step process. We have created a beta version of the test and now we need to collect data. The more employees and graduates we are able to test, the more exact our conclusions will be. The following phases of the project will include norm development so that people could compare their own results with the results of others who have similar jobs. This will help employees to define their strengths and development areas", says Magdalena Kaczmarek, Ph.D. from HumanTech Center for Social and Technological Innovation.

Matching Employees with Employers
The MatchBeta project has just been launched and it is open to employees, students, and employers. At this stage, it is important for us to collect as many completed test as possible, mainly from employees who have been on the job market already for a few years. Thanks to the collected data, the system will learn what are the correlations between people’s attributes and specific jobs and the levels of job satisfaction. Next, based on this psychometric analysis, the M.A.I.A system will develop detailed behavioral profiles related to specific professions and will be able to indicate what professions are best suited to a given person. Additionally, based on the tests completed by employers, M.A.I.A. will be able to suggest candidates, who are the best match for the requirements of a given job and the organizational culture of the company.
"Project MatchBeta with the M.A.I.A. system, is a synthesis of psychology and job preferences defined by data, in an analytical process. Artificial intelligence learns automatically and draws conclusions. M.A.I.A. not only helps students to choose best suited professions, but also assists professionals in their career planning. Moreover, it pre-selects suitable candidates, which makes the recruitment process more efficient", summarizes Mariusz Śpiewak, Partner at PwC, Leader of Data Analytics.
System M.A.I.A. constitutes only one element of the MatchBeta project. Eventually, the www.matchbeta.pl site will include an extensive Karieroteka [Career Catalogoue], which will provide definitions of new jobs. It will allow young people to learn about interesting jobs and also to hear from professionals, who already have several years of experience in a given role and industry. Employers will be able to promote selected jobs in Karieroteka and educate potential candidates about the required skills and expectations of the employer.
Towards the end of the first phase of MatchBeta, we are planning joined meetings of interns and employers, coupled with workshops devoted to social projects.
