Does separation with a loved-one change the way we perceive mementos (e.g. souvenirs, clothes, and photographs) associated with the relationship? The research project conducted by psychologists from the Sopot Campus of SWPS University proposes a new way of looking at symbolic objects. The research results may help to understand coping mechanisms occurring in cases of painful separation.

Research objectives

This research aims to demonstrate cognitive and motivational processes that may determine people’s willingness to employ SM in judgments and behavior. The empirical goal is to demonstrate the model in the context of romantic relationships: the question is when and why individuals tend to behave as if inanimate objects associated with their loved ones were literal surrogates of these people.

This research aims to investigate whether experiential vs. rational thinking and unsatisfied need for closeness with a romantic partner, studied in isolation, would determine declarative and behavioral expressions of SM.
