Professor Adam Bodnar Awarded Amnesty International Chair

Professor Adam Bodnar, from SWPS University’s Faculty of Law in Warsaw has been awarded the Amnesty International Chair for his contribution to the protection and promotion of human rights in Poland.

Amnesty International Chair Award

The annual Amnesty International Chair is awarded by Ghent University, located in Belgium. The award recognizes special contributions to the cause of human rights.

Adam Bodnar was elected Ombudsman and Human Rights Commissioner by the Polish Parliament in 2015. His five-year term in office ended in 2020, however the Polish parliament (Sejm) is yet to elect a new Commissioner. Adam Bodnar is a doctor of law, lawyer and professor at the Faculty of Law at SWPS University. His commitment to human rights has already won him several international awards, including the 2011 Tolerance Prize of the Polish LGBTI organizations, the 2018 Rafto Prize, and the 2019 Rule of Law Award.

Award Ceremony

An online presentation of the Amnesty Chair to Adam Bodnar will take place on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at 20:00 CEST (UTC+2).

Professor Bodnar will deliver a keynote speech "Rule of Law and Democracy at Stake in Poland" relating to his five-year term as the Commissionaire for Human Rights, and his efforts to champion the rule of law in the country. Register for online streaming »

The speech will be followed by a panel discussion with renowned experts on human rights, including Eva Brems – professor of human rights law Alicja Gescinska – a Polish-Belgian philosopher and writer, and Wies De Graeve – Director of Amnesty International.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session.

Award Recipient

Professor Adam Bodnar – is a lawyer specializing in constitutional law and human rights. He has held the position of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Poland since September 2015. He is also a former Vice-President of the Helsinki Foundation of Human Rights (2010-2015). Throughout his career, he has been working with many NGOs, including Panoptykon Foundation (Chair of the Foundation Council), ClientEarth Poland (member of the Program Council), Professor Zbigniew Hołda Association (co-founder and member of the board). Additionally, he was a member of the Civic Legislation Forum operating at the Batory Foundation and a member of the Board of Directors of the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture (2014 - 2015).

Prof. Bodnar is an author and co-author of numerous scientific publications, in particular on the topic of human rights. His doctoral theses A multilayer citizenship in the European constitutional space received a special prize in a competition organized by Przegląd Sejmowy (Sejm Overview), a bi-monthly publication of the Polish Parliament (Sejm). Professor Bodnar obtained his post-doctoral degree (habilitacja) at the University of Warsaw in 2019.
