Memorial sites of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camps play an important role as a warning and a lesson against horrific crimes committed by totalitarian regimes. However, for the warning to be loud and clear, these sites must be preserved and they must fulfil their educational role, which requires significant resources and effective management systems. During the seminar we will present the idea and the current status of the pilot study on the key factors determining the achievement of strategic goals of museums and memorial sites of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camps.

Economics of Memorial Sites: Researching Museums and Memorial Sites of the Former Nazi German Concentration and Extermination Camps

Memorial sites of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camps play an important role as a warning and lesson against horrific crimes committed by totalitarian regimes. However, for the warning to be loud and clear, these sites must be preserved, speak and fulfil their educational role. To safeguard the crucial social values, memorial sites require significant resources and effective management systems. The majority of institutionalized memorial sites face considerable financial and organizational difficulties, although some of them fulfil their social mission very effectively and develop best management, fundraising, and commemoration standards. So far, the economic, financial and management aspects of the preservation and operation of memorial sites have not been studied from the empirical, analytical or theoretical point of view. Therefore, in order to fill this gap, we have decided to develop and run a long-term research program of economics of memorial sites.

Economics of memorial sites is a newly developing applied scientific discipline, which by design constitutes a set of empirically and analytically based best practices, correlations, dependencies and measures of effectiveness related to the economic, financial and managerial aspects of organization, institutionalization, commemoration, preservation and running of memorial sites.

The first research phase will include the main institutionalized memorial sites related to the Nazi German camp system, located in post-war Poland. Therefore Piotr M. A. Cywiński, Ph.D. and Adam Szpaderski, Associate Professor at SWPS University will present the idea and the program of economics of memorial sites focusing on the current pilot study on the key factors determining the achievement of strategic goals of museums and memorial sites of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camps. They will also discuss a potential pan-European comparative studies project on determinants and strategies of effectiveness of institutionalized memorial sites related to the Nazi German camp system. The research is conducted by the Center for Research on the Economics of Memorial Sites of the SWPS University.
