For the past two years, the public debate has been dominated by images of refugees making their way to Europe and by the concerned reactions of European citizens to the asylum issue. Social media have played a significant role in these events.
Professor Godfried Engbersen, from Erasmus University Rotterdam, will talk about “Refugees and the role of social media” in his guest lecture, at SWPS University in Warsaw. The lecture is a part of the series “Challenges of Humanities in the 21st Century”, organized by SWPS University Interdisciplinary Doctoral Studies Program.
Lecture open to the public – free admission.

Migration, Social Media, and Integration of Refugees
The lecture will focus on two topics related to migration. Firstly, Professor Engbersen will analyze the role of social media in the migration-decisions of refugees. He will also explore how information from social media was assessed and validated in migration decision-making about migration routes and destination countries.
The second part will be devoted to the issue of refugee integration in Europe. Attention is currently focused on the problems relating to the local reception of asylum seekers. At the same time, however, policymakers face a second fundamental challenge, which is the question of how to facilitate the integration of asylum seekers who have been granted a residence permit into European societies. Professor Engbersen will present the analysis of his Dutch research on migration and social media and on the integration of refugees into Dutch society.
