Museums have always played a leading role in creating national citizens. In today’s global world do they also create global citizens who engage actively with diversity next door and across the world? In her lecture titled Artifacts and Allegiances: How Museums Put the Nation and the World on Display, Professor Peggy Levitt, Senior Research Fellow at Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, will provide an overview of great changes that are on the way in museums around the world.
The lecture, in the series Challenges of Humanities in the 21st Century, is organized by the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program at SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities, in cooperation with POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

Artifacts and Allegiances: How Museums Put the Nation and the World on Display
By some estimates, one out of every seven people in the world today is an international or internal migrant. Our cities are increasingly diverse—people from over 184 countries call London home. So how do we learn to get along? Museums have always played a leading role in creating national citizens. In today’s global world do they also create global citizens who engage actively with diversity next door and across the world? In this talk, Professor Levitt will take us around the world to tell the compelling story of how today's museums are making sense of immigration and globalization. Based on firsthand conversations with museum directors, curators, and policymakers; descriptions of current and future exhibitions; and the inside stories about the famous paintings and iconic objects that define collections, she provides a close-up view of how different kinds of institutions balance nationalism and cosmopolitanism. By comparing museums in Europe, the United States, Asia, and the Middle East, she tells the fascinating story of a sea change underway in the museum world at large.

Sociologist and author. She is Chair and Professor of Sociology at Wellesley College and a Senior Research Fellow at Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations. She is also the co-director of the Transnational Studies Initiative at Harvard. Her current research examines global citizenship and global social protection.
