The Internet shapes identity, space and politics. New media make older ways of thinking about the private and the public obsolete. In his lecture on “Cities and Capitalism: Questioning New Technology”, Professor Jeremy Tambling from the University of Manchester will talk about new technology and its dual relation to global capitalism and to the city, with special reference to Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis.
The lecture, organized by SWPS University's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program is a part of the series The Challenges of the Humanities of the 21st Century.

Cities and Capitalism: Questioning New Technology
What texts and theoretical tools will help to read what the Internet means, and how it shapes identity and space and politics? How do new media make older ways of thinking about the private and the public out of date, and what have they given in its place? Professor Jeremy Tambling from the University of Manchester will talk about cities, capitalism and new technology.
With special reference to Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis, this lecture will raise questions concerning new technology, and its dual relation to global capitalism and to the city.
Professor Jeremy Tambling
The speaker, Jeremy Tambling is a writer and critic. He is Professor Emeritus of Literature at Manchester University and Honorary Professor of Comparative Literature at University of Hong Kong.
His literary interests range from Boccaccio to Kafka, Chaucer to Cinema. As a literary scholar, he uses critical and cultural theory, and the culture of cities, especially London. He is the author of numerous books, publications and reviews on Blake, Dickens, the nineteenth-century. His current research includes work on cities in literature and the history of the Devil, with reference to Freud, Blake and Dostoevsky.
