Anyone who has ever tried to stop smoking or keep up an exercise routine knows that it is not easy to change a habit. Yet, behavior change related to lifestyle impacts not only individuals, but whole nations and the world. In his lecture entitled "Behavior Change Interventions: Design and Evaluation, Deconstruction and Implementation", Professor Charles Abraham from the University of Melbourne will assess the impact of behavioral change intervention on health, health care and health policy.
The lecture, organized by SWPS University's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program is a part of the series The Challenges of the Humanities of the 21st Century.

Behavior Change Interventions: Design and Evaluation, Deconstruction and Implementation
During the lecture Professor Abraham will assess how behavior change interventions are affecting health, health care and health policy. He will also consider how we might develop behavior change research to optimize its applied impact. Moreover, the co-creation of interventions will be highlighted in order to ensure acceptability, sustainability and effectiveness in practice. Furthermore, drawing on the Information Motivation Behavioural Skills Model, the lecture will illustrate how we can make a better use of available scientific evidence in relation to information provision, persuasive communication and behavioral regulation.
It will be argued that an experimental approach to identifying modifiable regulatory process and selecting change techniques is foundational to effective behavior change design. This will be considered in light of the reflective impulsive model of behavioral regulation. The importance of the process evaluation of interventions will be emphasized; furthermore, the use of meta-analyses to retrospectively identify modifiable processes and intervention features associated with effectiveness will be discussed. Finally, the nudge theory will be discussed briefly.
Speaker
Charles Abraham – Professor at Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences, University of Melbourne. He is an applied social and health psychologist specializing in translational health research. His research focuses on the design, evaluation and implementation of interventions to change behavior patterns, especially those with potential to improve public health and health care effectiveness. He has led, and collaborated on, many multidisciplinary, cross-institutional and international research projects, his research has had both practice and policy impact. He has held scientific advisor positions with the UK Department of Health, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the UK House of Lords. He was one of 7 psychologists included in a list of the leading 100 practicing scientists in the UK produced by the UK Science Council in 2014. He is also a practicing health psychologist registered by the UK Health and care Professional Council. He holds honorary Chairs at the University of Maastricht, Exeter, Nottingham, Sussex and Curtin.
