Bullying is a phenomenon that can happen at school, at work and, not surprisingly, in prison, where the propensity for violent behavior is even greater. Dutch scientists conducted a study on the process of managing bullying in a minimum-security prison. During her lecture, Associate Professor Eva Gemzøe Mikkelsen from the University of Southern Denmark will present results of this study.
The lecture, organized by SWPS University's Interdisciplinary Doctoral School is a part of the series The Challenges of the Humanities of the 21st Century.

Purpose
The purpose of the presentation is to describe tertiary stage interventions with regards to bullying among colleagues in a minimum-security prison with a special focus on the factors obstructing the implementation and effect of interventions.
Methodology
Data were obtained by means of notes from pre-intervention individual interviews, as well as observations during the intervention process. Interventions included planning meetings, coaching of managers, all-day workshops, coaching with the alleged bullies as well an intervention targeting bystanders.
Results
Interviews and observations showed various antecedent factors that also played a role in the process of managing the bullying, the most important being related to the management of conflicts; i.e. the section manager’s laissez-faire management style, a generally poor culture for constructive conflict management, and low management competence in relation to managing conflicts and bullying among employees.
Implications for research and practice
The study yields important knowledge on the process of managing workplace bullying and the factors that may obstruct the intervention process. As such, the study may inspire both future research and practice.
