We are pleased to announce that our Faculty of Law in Warsaw launches an international visiting program for distinguished scholars in the legal profession. Our first guest will be Professor Jiří Přibáň a Czech academic from Cardiff University, specializing in philosophy of law, sociology, and politology. During his lecture, Professor Přibáň will present his latest monograph Constitutional Imaginaries. A Theory of European Societal Constitutionalism.
Constitutional Imaginaries
The term constitutional imaginary is defined as a set of ideas and beliefs that help to motivate and justify the practice of authority. In his lecture, Prof. Přibáň will argue that theoretical inquiries into populism must move beyond their normative depictions as either the ultimate danger to constitutional democracy or the most effective remedy for the current crisis. In particular, Prof. Přibáň will discuss the following issues:
- sociological perspective on constitutionalism as populism
- the imaginary of the public sphere and its constitution of the specific distinction between the public opinion (the doxa) and expert knowledge (the episteme)
- the imaginary of authenticity and its constitution of explosive communities in the context of Europeanisation and globalization
- the EU’s responses to the imaginaries of constitutional populism.
