Project Outline

The latest research on religiosity and spirituality has produced contradictory results, perhaps for the fact the previous studies made no distinction between the two concepts.

The objectives of this project are to examine the influence of religiosity and spirituality on hedonistic and eudaimonic well-being and to analyze potential mediators of the relationship between religiosity and spirituality with hedonistic and eudaimonic well-being, in the form of social motives, such as: self-esteem, sense of meaning, belonging, and a sense of control.

This will be a correlative study and it will be carried out on a group of 500 adults, with measurements repeated after 3 and 6 months. The study aims to organize current knowledge on the subject, and attempts to answer the question whether religiosity and spirituality have an impact on well-being.

Inconsistent results are also influenced by the fact that various forms of well-being usually were not taken into account in the previous studies. Moreover, longitudinal studies carried out on non-student and non-clinical populations (especially on representative samples) are still rare in this area of interest. For this reason, the implementation of the proposed research project will help clarify the important problem of the relationship between religion, spirituality and well-being.

Research on the relationship between religiosity, spirituality and subjective well-being has become fashionable in recent years. However, there is a lot of confusion in this research field. Moreover, there is a lack of research on populations other than students and of Anglo-Saxon cultural background, and also lack of longitudinal studies. The proposed research aims to organize knowledge by the simultaneous application of measures of religiosity, spirituality and various forms of well-being, and to fill gaps in current knowledge by conducting a longitudinal study on a representative sample.

  • The inclusion of social motives, as possible mediators, will allow to deepen the understanding of the mechanism underlying this relationship. On the other hand, longitudinal perspective will allow to draw the cause-and-effect explanations.

The project is a part of a planned broader research program focused on creating a test model that will describe the influence of religiosity and spirituality on well-being from a cross-cultural perspective.
