Łukasz Barwiński holds a doctoral degree in psychology and an undergraduate degree in pedagogy from the Jagiellonian University. He completed a postgraduate certification program in clinical psychology — specialization in clinical neuropsychology.
He researches psychological and neuropsychological mechanisms underlying psychopathy, such as disrupted processing of emotional signals, both in persons that disregard social norms (adults and juvenile offenders) and the non-criminal population. He is also interested in psychological and neuropsychological aspects of consciousness, freedom of decision making, and free will.
He is a certified psychotherapist (certificate issued by the Polish Psychiatric Association, the Psychotherapy and Rehabilitation Research Section).
Dr. Barwiński was a Principal Investigator in a project “Emotional processing in psychopathy”, funded by the National Science Centre. His latest research focuses on the emotional and executive aspects of behavioral control and cognitive and affective empathy deficits in psychopathy.
He authored numerous book chapters and articles published in academic journals such as Problems of Forensic Sciences and Acta Neuropsychologica. He gave over 50 presentations at scientific conferences.
He is the winner of the 2018/2019 Dr. Jan Zygmunt Robel award for the best doctoral thesis in the discipline of forensic science.
At SWPS University, he teaches classes in clinical psychology, health psychology, psychological assessment, psychological skills, and critical text analysis. He also lectures for students of the postgraduate program “Forensic psychologist in criminal and civil court proceedings” at SWPS University in Katowice.
