The goal of the project is to understand how prototyping and testing of different solutions on a small scale can help solve social conflicts that arise during adaptation to climate change. Additionally, the project provides development opportunities for Early Stage Researchers.
Project No.: 101120074
Project Objectives
The CoDesign4Transitions project offers interdisciplinary learning opportunities for ten Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) in areas such as participatory design, co-design, sustainable design, service and systems design, democratic innovation, and climate transitions. The project will help the doctoral students to develop competencies indispensable for designing new approaches and their empirical verification through collaboration with the university’s local community.
The goals will be achieved thanks to a training program that includes collaboration with experts from academia and beyond. The network of experts includes the 6 grant beneficiaries from the academia and 13 Associate Partners from 9 countries, who provide advanced training in areas such as general knowledge as well as design and social sciences skills. ESRs will undergo training at the partnering universities, members of the network as well as internships at non-academic organizations.
The grant will enable SWPS University to begin research collaboration with the best European design universities, such as the Politecnico di Milano and Central Saint Martins, and the Central Saint Martins College, which is a part of the University of the Arts in London. We are delighted with this success, because this is the first grant of that magnitude at the Institute of Design, but we also know that this success would not be possible without cooperation with our partners – the team lead by Professor Mikołaj Cześnik from the Institute of Social Sciences, and without the experience of SWPS University’s Office for Research and the Office for Research Analytics.
The goal of the project is to understand how prototyping and testing of different solutions on a small scale can help solve social conflicts that arise during adaptation to climate change. Two doctoral students who, thanks to the grant, will soon begin their studies at our Interdisciplinary Doctoral School will explore this topic in close cooperation with the City of Warsaw.

Methodology
The 4-year research and training program consists of three research phases, including prototyping, materialization and visualization as well as facilitating system changes. These research projects are complemented by two implementation phases: project management and communication as well as dissemination and implementation of the newly gained knowledge.

Practical application of results
The key element of the project is to provide public institutions, businesses and public good organizations with solutions indispensable to achieving carbon neutrality, which they committed to by signing the Paris Agreement. The goal will be reached thanks to experimentation, using prototypes of solutions that will help to lower the risk of failure, and will provide tangible and visual evidence, which will engaging stakeholders in the development, testing, assessing and modifying the solutions.
