Institute of Design

The Institute of Design brings together the creative community of SWPS University across its campuses in Poland’s three largest cities: Warsaw, Kraków, and Wrocław. This includes designers and artists, as well as researchers exploring the field of art and design.

What We do

Our interdisciplinary work combines design and artistic practice with SWPS University’s strengths and expertise in social sciences and humanities. We collaborate with other universities, institutions, and companies to develop solutions that reshape culture, the economy, and everyday life. Through numerous international partnerships and grants, our teams conduct research and develop projects that result in publications in prestigious academic journals and presentations in leading cultural institutions in Poland and around the world, such as the Louvre, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Vitra Museum, Salone del Mobile, the International Architecture Biennale in Venice, and the London Design Biennale.

Our key areas of specialization include:

  • sustainable materials, techniques, and practices
  • identity of material culture
  • accessibility of law and information
  • art supporting marginalized communities.

Doctorates

SWPS University invites candidates interested in obtaining doctorates in fine arts and art conservation to apply to our Doctoral School or pursue the degree as an “external” student at our university.

“Design and art can no longer thrive without advanced knowledge, which increasingly often is developed as the result of engaging in design or art practice. Our graduates become experts who easily combine theory and practice, drawing upon the body of knowledge that has been accumulated in various areas and disciplines of science."
