An international consortium of eight universities, including SWPS University, will develop an extensive database providing the latest knowledge on China, containing information from various disciplines, such as domestic and foreign policy, economy, society and culture.
The project is carried out as part of the Horizon Europe research program and is funded by the European Commission.
Project objectives
China is resurgent as a global power that is changing the world. The European Union needs to develop a long-term strategy based on knowledge and enabling effective cooperation with this increasingly assertive political player. The situation is further complicated by factors such as the continued tension between the US and China, and China's entanglement in providing passive support to Russia in the Ukraine conflict. The consortium has brought together leading researchers who represent nine institutions from seven countries to work in synergy to build an independent knowledge base on China in Europe. This knowledge is intended to help provide EU institutions with information and analysis on the changes taking place in China and to identify possible ways of shaping EU policy towards the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
The researchers come from leading European think tanks and universities. They specialize in issues that include Chinese domestic and foreign policy, economy, society and culture. They collaborate with external experts, involve the youngest generations of scholars, and build sustainable research networks in Europe. They also disseminate their knowledge through open on-site and online events, open access publications and expertise as well as media and conference appearances.
An increasingly powerful China is undoubtedly not only a close partner, but also a growing challenge for the European Union. To better understand the development directions and policy decisions of this global giant, scientific knowledge based on solid methodology and using the latest data is needed. This is what we are trying to do in our project.

SWPS University’s team is responsible for researching the Chinese cultural sector and investigating what the cultural output, produced over the last ten years in China, tells us about the Chinese society. The team examines the latest films, theatre productions, visual arts, and literature, and analyzes the social themes reflected in these works and the ways their authors communicate with the audience.
Methodology
We will employ diverse interdisciplinary methods, including economic, political, legal, sociological as well as cultural studies methods, such as discourse analysis, quantitative and qualitative research, and field interviews.
