Institute of Humanities

The Institute of Humanities coordinates and oversees research projects carried out by SWPS University’s researchers and teaching-researchers, specializing in literary studies and culture and religion studies. The Institute has the power to grant doctoral and post-doctoral degrees (habilitacja) in these disciplines.

Coordination of Research Projects

The Institute of Humanities coordinates and evaluates research projects conducted by our academics specializing in different sub-disciplines of literary and culture and religion studies. Employees of the Institute include researchers from the Faculty of Humanities in Warsaw, the Faculty of Social Sciences in Warsaw, and the Faculty of Psychology and Communication in Wrocław.

The Institute is responsible for overseeing the research budget, securing research funding from grants and international projects, and research cooperation with research centers abroad, specializing in humanities.

Aacademic Promotions

SWPS University has the authority to grant doctoral and post-doctoral degrees (habilitacja) in Humanities, in the discipline of literary studies and cultural and religious studies. So far, over 70 doctoral degrees and 31 post-doctoral degrees (habilitacja) have been granted.

Additionally, the University successfully conducted 2 proceedings for the conferment of professorial titles (data as of October 2019).

The Center for Comparative Research on Memory Cultures (CCRMC) brings together scholars invested in interdisciplinary research in the fields of social sciences and humanities. The researcher apply cutting-edge methodologies to memory studies, visual culture studies and research on historical trauma, affect and ethnicity and nationalism. Head of the Center: Katarzyna Bojarska, Ph.D., researcher of cultural memory, visual culture and contemporary art.

Research

Research Scope

We focus on research, which has a potential to improve the quality of life for various social groups, and conduct studies commissioned by local governments and different organizations.

For example, our researchers, in cooperation with sociologists and psychologists, prepared a comprehensive diagnostic report, which provided data for the development of a multifaceted development strategy for Sopot, a city in norther Poland, for the period 2021-2030. The project was commissioned by the Municipality of Sopot. Furthermore, a team of researchers from the Creative Economy Research Center conducted a comprehensive survey of the artistic community in Poland, which was commissioned by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. Data obtained in the study provided information on the number of artists, artistic disciplines, and financial standing of artists, which will be used to draft a government regulation on financial support for artists.

Additionally, the Institute secures research grants from various funding bodies, such as the National Science Centre, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the Foundation for Polish Science.

According to the Office of Electronic Communication, three out of four Poles use smartphones on daily basis. Although these devices may seem to be just more advanced versions of first mobile phones, their technological capabilities and functionalities place them in a category of microcomputers, which can be customized by dedicated apps that significantly transform user behavior. Thanks to GPS capabilities and transportation services apps, such as Uber, smartphones have changed how people function in urban spaces. They provide new possibilities of telecommuting and consumption of entertainment. Applications such as Facebook or Tinder have reshaped the architecture of social and intimate relationships, by changing interpersonal and social dynamics and extending or intensifying social networks. However, despite the scale and sudden character of these transformations, reflections on the subject remain largely in the journalistic sphere and are often tinted with anecdotal data and didactic narration concerning corrosion of human relations and threats of addiction.

The ways of recording written texts and music have been changing throughout the ages. Focusing on the first half of the 20th century, researchers from SWPS University examined how the technology available at the time influenced various platforms and formats of popular culture.

Nowadays, electronic sports (also known as e-sports) are one of the fastest growing branches of digital entertainment. Professional e-sport competitions draw large audiences, not only in the case of mass e-sport events, but also in relation to live transmissions of e-sport games available on digital streaming platforms. Although South Korea remains the birthplace of e-sports, a rapid and successful development of this discipline has been noted in many other regions of the world. Currently, Poland and Hong Kong are two leading countries with a rapid proliferation of initiatives related to competitive playing of e-sports. Dr. Mateusz Felczak from SWPS University researches the phenomenon of e-sport culture.
