Social distortions in comparative judgments may lead to the categorization of people and divisions and thus to depreciation of their values. The research project relates to the phenomenon known as Self-humanization (tendency to view themselves as more human than others). The planned study (also in cross cultural context) shall verify alternative interpretation of this phenomenon. Positive verification of the assumptions may have significant and original contribution to the ongoing discussion on the nature of the comparative judgments in the context of cross-cultural differences.

Social distortions in comparative judgments may lead to the categorization of people and divisions and thus to depreciation of their values. The research project relates to the phenomenon known as Self-humanization (tendency to view themselves as more human than others). The planned study (also in cross cultural context) shall verify alternative interpretation of this phenomenon. Positive verification of the assumptions may have significant and original contribution to the ongoing discussion on the nature of the comparative judgments in the context of cross-cultural differences.
Research objectives
The research project concerns a wide class of phenomena known as biases in comparative judgments (e.g., the better-than-average effect, the under- and overestimation effects, self-humanizing). The project includes a critical analysis of existing empirical and theoretical achievements, including an analysis of the cognitive and motivational mechanisms responsible for the emergence of biases in comparative judgments. The primary focus of this project is an alternative explanation for the self-humanizing effect (the tendency of people to see themselves as more human than average person). This alternative explanation relates to the feature matching model of Tversky (1977). Our research (some of which is cross-cultural) is also relevant to the roles of 'hot' and 'cool' mechanisms of self-humanizing (motivational and cognitive factors). The aim of the project is to integrate two research approaches: research on infra-humanization and research on self-humanizing. The project is theoretically significant and will make a substantial contribution to the international discussion on the mechanisms of self-humanizing.
