Consider the significance of writing an autobiographical text. How does your perception of yourself change depending on the type of text you are writing, e.g., a curriculum vitae, an entry in your diary, or a Facebook post highlighting an achievement you are proud of? Marta Wróblewska, Ph.D., has been researching a new genre of academic text – an impact case study.
The project is funded by the National Science Center, project no. 2022/47/B/HS6/01341.
The goal of the study is a comprehensive investigation of a new academic evaluation practice – the assessment of "research impact". The study offers an interdisciplinary perspective on the topic, focusing on the emergent genre of academic text, created in the evaluative context, – the so-called "impact case study". The genre is used as a lens through which related social practices in academia can be studied. The project draws on methods and theories of linguistics, sociology and philosophy.
This project looks at a new genre of academic texts – an impact case study. Impact case studies are submitted by academic staff for their periodic evaluations. Writing these documents impels scholars to reflect on the influence of their work beyond academia and to narrate this influence in a convincing way. 'Impact', defined in that way, has become a key concept in the evaluation of science over the last decade. In some cases, it may account for as much as 25 percent of the assessed department's final score.
There are various models of impact evaluation but currently the most widespread one is the case study approach. This approach was introduced in the UK and is often emulated in other countries, such as Norway and Poland. For example, “societal impact” was one of three evaluation criteria, alongside the quality of scientific activity and research results, in the 2022 evaluation of Polish research centers.

Methodology
The study takes a comparative perspective looking at discursive practices related to impact evaluation in three countries: UK, Norway and Poland. The research design is interdisciplinary and aims to offer a complete description of a new phenomenon emerging in academia.
Practical applications of results
The study will contribute to specialized fields of research: genre studies, higher education studies, evaluation and valuation studies, governmentality studies. Additionally, my research outcomes can inform institutional practice – as such, the results will be of interest to university managers, administrative staff and policy makers.
