Project objectives
The BETTER4U project aims to identify and manage the personalized determinants of weight gain to combat the rising global prevalence of overweight and obesity. This is achieved through uniform, globally adaptable, and practically assessed public health initiatives and key interventions. By leveraging advanced artificial intelligence technologies and collaborating with an international network of experts, BETTER4U explores the global obesity challenge to deliver realistic, tangible solutions.
BETTER4U proposes a line of interdisciplinary research that may a major leap forward in developing personalized interventions aiming at prevention of overweight and obesity, and weight regain. The BETTER4U intervention will use artificial intelligence in designing a novel tool, accounting for genetic factors, microbiome, metabolic indicators, diet, physical activity, emotions and beliefs of a patient, to provide a high-quality daily counselling, matching patient’s needs.

Methodology
To achieve these project goals, the researchers will implement the following methods:
- Conducting meta-analyses and extensive literature reviews to comprehensively decipher the genetic, metabolomic, microbiotic, socioeconomic, geographical, cultural, and lifestyle determinants linked to weight gain across the lifespan.
- Constructing a causal AI model of obesity determinants alongside a multi-country pilot study across seven European nations to design and develop the foundational BETTER4U intervention methodology for weight gain prevention.
- Deploying technology-assisted, real-time monitoring tools to track behavioral indicators and analyze their direct relationship to the surrounding environmental context.
- Executing a randomized controlled clinical trial to rigorously evaluate the efficacy of the novel BETTER4U intervention methodology, utilizing individually tailored recommendations for lifestyle modification.

Practical application of results
To maximize the transferability and real-world applicability of the BETTER4U intervention methodology, our goal is to systematically identify implementation barriers and facilitators while thoroughly evaluating outcomes among both participants and stakeholders. Ultimately, we will develop and disseminate comprehensive guidelines for the BETTER4U obesity prevention methodology, rooted in a people-centered, sustainable care approach.
