Professor Agata Dębowska is a Polish-British psychologist who researches various aspects of violence and prevention of violence. She obtained a doctoral degree in psychology from the University of Huddersfield, in the UK in 2014, and a post-doctoral degree (habilitacja) from SWPS University in 2021. She is a chartered psychologist certified by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and a qualified university lecturer certified by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in the UK.
Her research interests include intimate partner violence, child abuse and neglect, mental health and psychopathy. She carried out research projects concerning these issues in Poland, UK, Uganda, India, and the Caribbean (Barbados, Grenada, and Jamaica).
Prior to joining SWPS University, she held academic positions at the University of Sheffield, Liverpool John Moores Univeristy, and the University of Chester, in the United Kingdom.
Professor Dębowska published five book chapters and over 50 articles in international scientific journals, such as: Trauma, Violence, & Abuse, Child Abuse & Neglect, Sexual Abuse, Aggression and Violent Behavior, Law and Human Behavior, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Journal of Criminal Justice, Computers in Human Behavior, Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, Deviant Behavior, Journal of Affective Disorders, and Psychological Medicine.
She is the Principal Investigator (PI) on a research project entitled: “Eliciting third-party reactions to psychological intimate partner violence (PIPV) using personal experience narratives (PENs): A proof of concept study”, funded by the SWPS University's Research Development Fund (FRBN).
At SWPS University she teaches classes in Polish and English related to prevention of violence, psychology of violence, advanced psychometrics, group research projects, and applications of psychology.
She is also a member of the Research Ethics Committee at the Faculty of Psychology in Warsaw.
