Are average Poles interested in politics? Do they know their local MPs and the names of Ministers serving in the current government? Have they read the Constitution and are they familiar with laws and regulations decreed by the government? A team of sociologists and political scientists from SWPS University, led by Associate Professor Mikołaj Cześnik, will research what is the state of political knowledge among Poles and how this knowledge impacts their voting decisions and in consequence the politics of the country.

Are average Poles interested in politics? Do they know their local MPs and the names of Ministers serving in the current government? Have they read the Constitution and are they familiar with laws and regulations decreed by the government? A team of sociologists and political scientists from SWPS University, led by Associate Professor Mikołaj Cześnik, will research what is the state of political knowledge among Poles and how this knowledge impacts their voting decisions and in consequence the politics of the country.
Research Objectives
The research hypotheses relat to several areas. The first group concerns the ontological status of political knowledge in Poland. We put forward two hypotheses. In the first we hypothesise that political knowledge is a homogeneous, although syndromatic phenomenon. In the second we hypothesise that political knowledge is a heterogeneous, multidimensional phenomenon.
The second group of hypotheses relate to the current situation in Poland. We expect that nowadays political knowledge in Poland is rather low, and its levels differ between groups.
The third group of hypotheses concerns the dynamics of political knowledge in Poland. We expect that political knowledge in the postcommunist period has increased (mainly due to intensive education), and existing differences between social groups (in political knowledge) have deepened.
The fourth group of hypotheses concerns the effects of political knowledge in Poland. We expect that political knowledge is a strong correlate of political participation, it is an important determinant of satisfaction with democracy, and it is a strong correlate of political efficacy.
