Research Focus
health psychology

Aleksandra Łuszczyńska is a Professor at SWPS University’s Faculty of Psychology in Wrocław. She is the Head of the CARE-BEH Research Center specializing in applied research on health psychology and health. Professor Łuszczyńska leads a team of ten doctoral students who focus mainly on three areas of health psychology research, pursuing an overarching goal of improving the quality of life of individuals and whole populations. The first area of research focuses on developing health interventions, which help people increase the level of physical activity and adopt and maintain healthy diets. The second line of research centers around psychosocial resources, which enable individuals to improve their wellbeing or achieve a better quality of life. For example, the researchers discovered that patients who underwent lung cancer surgery achieve better postoperative health outcomes if they receive social support provided by medical professionals in the first few days after the operation. The third area of research at the CARE-BEH Center focuses on the implementation of health-related policies and various barriers and facilitators that may enable or hinder health behavior change.

The team collaborates with researchers around the world. Some of the partner universities include University of Zurich, University of Berlin, Deakin University in Australia, and Peking University in China. Scientific evidence on correlation between anxiety and sedentary behavior, provided by the CARE-BEH Center, was used by the World Health Organization to develop guidelines promoting healthy behaviors.

Certainly, it would not be possible to achieve so much and of such high quality without the fabulous dream team that works together with me. A team of very skillful, very engaged, and very determined young people, who are devoted to the cause of making the world a better place.
