Designing Design Thinking Methodology

Design Thinking (DT) emerged as a popular problem solving and idea generating method in creative teams. However, despite the rapid increase in interest in DT as a practical tool, evidence for its effectiveness is rather scarce. A team of researchers, including Karolina Dukała, Ph.D. /Assistant Professor from SWPS University’s Institute of Psychology set out to propose a new approach to DT.

What we researched:

  • We aimed to develop an evidence-based methodology to use Design Thinking and test its efficacy among teams working on a specific task.

How we did it:

The development process of the DTMethod consisted of the following steps:

  1. Literature review
  2. DTMethod description
  3. Proof of concept
  4. Experimental testing of DT Method.

Why is it important?

  • Because we have developed a design thinking method (DTMethod), which has proven to be effective in online teamwork setting. The DTMethod can be used for all types of problems. It can serve as a tool for developing new products, services, or processes. No prior expertise in Design Thinking is required from participants, however trained DTMethod instructor needed to facilitate the process.

A major advantage of the DTMethod is its clear structure, which is in accordance with the latest literature suggesting that complex and insufficiently defined problems require more systematic paradigms. A consistent methodology, including fundamental principles, roles, tools, and the proposed timetable will support organizations to start using design thinking in professional practice. Thanks to the structured and more predictable design thinking process, more organizations will be able to implement it in their practice. Such a level of predictability also makes it easier to determine the costs of applying this methodology. We provide a unified and validated framework that can be used for both practical and research purposes.
