What we do

The goal of the Center is to advance current knowledge about the fundamental human behavioral processes involved in decision making. Basic research conducted at the Center focuses on examining and explaining human behavior in different environmental contexts. For this purpose we use not only the tools and methods of behavioral psychology and contextual behavioral science, but also those employed in cognitive psychology and neuroscience.

DecisionLab Logo SWPS University

We focus mainly on behavioral economics research, in particular on the processes involved in discounting and valuation of goods that carry different types of costs.

Researches cognitive tendencies of investors and affect heuristic

Research
projects

The main goal of the Center is to conduct research. We focus on publication and dissemination of research results in the following areas:

Decision making in delayed conditions that simultaneously carry risky consequences

The majority of research projects in this area focus either on the intertemporal (time-related) aspects or on the risk factors of the decision making process. Our goal is to analyze the decision making process in situations when delay and risk are combined.

The impact of formal factors and cognitive control on unsystematic choices in research on discounting

The main goal of research in this area is to describe patterns of unsystematic discounting and to identify factors influencing this type of behavior. Apart from the formal decision characteristics, we take into consideration characteristics of cognitive control processes, mainly the executive functions of attention.

The role of mindfulness in intertemporal and risky decision making

The goal of this project is to show the impact of mindfulness, induced by visual or audio stimuli, on risky and intertemporal decision making. Additionally, we conduct systematic studies on the link between mindfulness competencies and psychological flexibility, and a subjective value of rewards requiring effort.

Affect heuristic - research among employees of the mining industry

The goal of the project is to research affect heuristic, i.e. the correlation between perceived benefit and risk assessment among miners and security guards.

Neurobehavioral correlates of effort-based decision making

The goal of the project is to discover a mathematical formula and neural indicators of subjective assessment of rewards that require effort, in situations where: the effort and rewards are real (real situations) or are imaginary (hypothetical situations), and when the reward assessment happens prior to receiving the reward (effort as a cost), and after receiving the reward (effort as an investment). We will conduct two experimental studies, including a behavioral study and one using the event-related potential (ERP) technique, measured with an electroencephalogram (EEG).

Cognitive inclinations of investors

The goal of the project is to research cognitive inclinations among stock market investors in the technical analysis domain.

Nudging: why does it work what are its foundations? The role of default options providing choice architecture, in research on discounting

The goal of the project is to examine how default options impact health, environmental, and saving behaviors, not only from the benefit perspective, but also losses, both in delayed and accelerated decisions. Research on default options in the discounting context are a new field of research. Studying default options in discounting may help to develop programs similar to Employee Investment Plans (PPK), health prevention programs, and may aid to maintain pro-environment behaviors.
