Researchers from SWPS University will use health psychology approaches to identify psychological and social determinants of antibiotic use in primary care. They will also develop and implement interventions to optimize this type of treatment.
The project is co-financed by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) as part of the Polish Returns Program and by the National Science Centre. Grant numbers: NAWA ref. BPN/PPO/2023/1/00005/DEC/1, NCN project no. 2024/03/1/HS6/00006.
Project objectives
Antibiotic overuse and antimicrobial resistance are among the highest health and mortality risks globally. It is crucial to promote behaviors that will help to prevent infections and use antibiotics appropriately and only if necessary.
This research program aims to:
- "Diagnose" the situation, i.e., understand the factors that influence antibiotic use in Poland and antibiotic stewardship interventions (e.g., programs, strategies).
- Build a foundation for projects implementing interventions to reduce the risks of infections, antibiotics overuse and the development of antibiotic resistance in primary care.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is among the top public health priorities of our times. Changing health behaviors related to infection prevention and prudent antibiotic use are critical in order to mitigate against the development of AMR and ensure the effectiveness of antibiotics. In this research program, we use health psychology approaches to identify psychological and social determinants of, and implement interventions to optimize, antibiotic use in primary care. This will contribute to multidisciplinary research on antibiotics and AMR and help address this important public health challenge.

Methodology
The research program employs multiple research methods, including:
- Surveys and qualitative research to identify relevant behaviors and behavioral, social and system influences on antibiotic use.
- Systematic reviews to synthesize evidence on influences on antibiotic use and relevant interventions (e.g. programs, strategies, campaigns) used in Poland and other countries.
- A prioritization exercise to select feasible and relevant interventions to evaluate and implement the promotion of prudent antibiotic use in primary care in Poland.
- Establishing a network of stakeholders and experts to guide applied research into antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance in Poland.

Practical application of results
The project will result in comprehensive and up-to-date evidence on factors that influence, and interventions that target, infection prevention/care, antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance. This will provide an evidence-based foundation to develop novel interventions or adapt existing interventions, and evaluate and implement them.
As Poland is among the highest antibiotic consumers in Europe, understanding the reasons for and improving this situation is needed. The proposed research contributes to addressing this important, timely, and urgent public health priority.
