CEDMO 2.0 is a continuation of research on disinformation in Central Europe (especially in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia) that was initiated during the first phase of the CEDMO project. The project is carried out by an international consortium.

The implementation of this project is made possible through a strategic combination of European and national support. SWPS University has been awarded 252,336 PLN by the European Commission under the DIGITAL Europe Programme. The project also benefits from a 224,314 PLN grant from the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education via the Co-financed International Projects scheme. Additionally, SWPS University is contributing 24,924 PLN of its own funds. Project no.: DIGITAL-2023-DEPLOY-04-EDMO-HUBS, 101158609.

Project objectives

Central Europe is suffering the brunt of disinformation and technological uncertainty, which is reaching unprecedented levels on topics ranging from health to politics to regulation of artificial intelligence. The situation in this geographical region worsened after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, which is coupled with hybrid attacks that include tactics such as the creation and dissemination of disinformation. The aim of the CEDMO 2.0 project is to follow up on the previous activities of the already established CEDMO consortium — a multinational, independent, and interdisciplinary hub focused on tackling information disorders in Czechia, Poland, and Slovakia. The consortium involves thirteen expert organizations.

The unique assets of CEDMO include not only the potential to build on its previous outcome, but also on the accumulated knowledge of local information environments, which will be utilized to strengthen fact-checking, detection and analysis of disinformation, improving public awareness by media literacy campaigns, or monitoring national/EU policies.

The goal of CEDMO is to make a significant contribution to preventing digital disruptions that are becoming ever more technologically sophisticated (e.g., deepfakes), driven by large-scale and targeted disinformation campaigns. Therefore, we give AI-based technology more sustained attention, for example by the use of open-source intelligence (OSINT), forensic and automated journalism, machine learning and pattern recognition in visual propaganda detection, automated fact checking or media literacy tools based on AI.

Members of the consortium include:

  • Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic) – consortium leader
  • Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) (Czech Republic)
  • University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava (Slovakia)
  • SWPS University (Poland)
  • Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies (Slovakia)
  • Demagog.cz (Czech Republic)
  • Agence France-Presse (France)
  • Athens Technology Center (Greece)

The CEDMO 2.0 project continues the activities carried out by the international CEDMO hub, which includes institutions from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This continuation obviously indicates the success of the early phase of CEDMO, but above all it proves the still important role of the issue of disinformation in modern societies, including those in Central Europe. CEDMO 2.0 includes activities related to media education, professional verification of information and, most importantly for SWPS University, research on the disinformation phenomenon in its broadest sense.

  • Methodology

Research conducted under CEDMO 2.0 primarily addresses the structures of disinformation messages and their social impact. Accordingly, we use quantitative and qualitative methodologies to address the content (linguistic and visual) of disinformation messages and the ways in which such messages are received. Methodologies include, but are not limited to: qualitative and quantitative discourse analysis, content analysis, visual analysis, case studies, in-depth interviews, CATI (Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing) and CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing) surveys, and experiments.

The researchers employ a multidisciplinary approach that involves methods from various social science disciplines.

  • Practical application of results

The results of research carried out by the CEDMO 2.0 hub will be used primarily to design and implement educational activities focused on building public resistance to disinformation. The research will enable identification of the dominant methods of influence, semantic structures or rhetoric that occur in disinformation messages, and to correlate them with the impact of disinformation on audiences. In addition, the researchers will produce extensive and diverse datasets that can serve as comparative data in the future. Moreover, an important goal of the project is to develop and refine a consistent model for studying disinformation messages.
