The Cultural and Creative Sector (CCS) in Europe provides societies with goods and services of symbolic, cultural and economic, value, specific not only to each of the 46 European countries, but also their many regions. The various branches of the CCS sector are important contributors to the development of local economies and strengthen local and regional identities.
CICERONE is an ambitious, interdisciplinary international research project. Its main goal is to provide an innovative way of understanding how the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) operate and provide a new foundation for effective policies at EU, national and local levels that affect these economic activities.
The project is financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program, grant no. 822778.
Project objectives
The CICERONE project entails a four-year research program on cultural and creative industries, which aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of how the cultural and creative industries operate. Using the Global Production Network approach, developed by Neil Coe and others, the project will:
- Improve our understanding of CCIs
- Formulate building blocks for policy making in collaboration with various stakeholders
- Facilitate better cross-sectoral mobilization and connections between stakeholders.
Methodology
The CICERONE project takes a novel approach by applying the Global Production Network (GPN) methodology to the cultural and creative industries to better understand how the cultural and creative industries operate in Europe, what role they play in the Global Production Network (GPN), and Creative Value Chains (CVC).
This approach allows not only to understand the role of local determinants influencing different phases of production and consumption, but also takes into consideration transborder links, codependences of particular production phases, and the impact of CCS on the local economic development and shaping of the local and regional identity.
Practical application of results
The project will provide the academia and media with in-depth knowledge concerning the global/European output in the creative industries sector. The results will also provide evidence for the improvement of the cultural policy of the European Union.
The team will develop a portal addressed to the academia, cultural policy makers, and journalists, which will provide examples and cases from the field of creative economy and serve as a repository of information about global production network in CCS. The team will identify strategic forms of joint initiatives in cultural and creative industries.
