The Parenthood Regret Scale (PRS) is the result of a collaboration between SWPS University and UCLouvain in Belgium. The PRS has proven to be a reliable tool. Results obtained using the tool confirm our assumptions that parental regret significantly impacts parental performance.

We encourage scientists specializing in family and parenthood studies to continue their research to expand our knowledge on this topic. Below, you will find different language versions of the Parental Regret Scale.

Project objectives

The Parenthood Regret Scale (PRS) was developed to measure the intensity of parents’ regret concerning the decision to have children. The tool have been developed in the process of a series of studies involving participants from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds (English-speaking, French-speaking, and Polish-speaking).

In the recent years, scientific interest in the serious emotional distress that can result from parenthood, has been growing. Our study focuses on an issue that has remained a taboo for many years, and seeks to understand why some parents begin to regret their decision to have children, and what consequences this may have.

Psychometric parameters

The PRS consists of 12 items that address the cognitive and emotional aspects of regret related to the decision of having a child. Each item is rated on a 5-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). The structure of the PRS is univariate. Validation of the scale included exploratory and confirmatory analyses, which showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha above 0.80 across different versions). Scores on the PRS scale are negatively correlated with life satisfaction (r = - .24) and positively correlated with depressive symptoms (r = .27) and parental burnout (r = .44).

Project results

Currently, the PRS is the most comprehensive measure of parenthood regret thanks to its inclusion of both cognitive and emotional aspects of this emotion. The scale can help explore the causes and consequences of parenthood regret and its relationship with other psychological and social characteristics. Studies that employ the PRS can increase public awareness of parenthood regret, which, in turn, can help reduce the taboo surrounding the topic.
