Management
with human face

The Department of Management promotes management with a human face - interdisciplinary approach and methodological quality, which provide solutions to practical problems of management.

The complexity of an organizational space requires application of varied methods and techniques in a research process, therefore we use not only qualitative, but also quantitative methods, to fully understand a researched phenomenon, in accordance with the rigors of methodological quality. This approach allows us to develop management approaches aligned with global humanistic trends that place people in the center of attention. We believe that the role of science in this world is to explain and predict phenomena in such a way that the resulting knowledge provides key support for the process of management. Therefore, we activley collaborate with the best universities abroad, leading companies, and public institutions.

At SWPS University’s Department of Management, we are committed to educating middle level specialists and managers, who believe that it is people and not walls or computers that provide foundations for business organizations and public institutions; managers, who treat all people, regardless of their position in the organization and individual differences, with attention and care; managers who believe in continuous development and skill transfer between different areas of life.

Research

Our research interests focus on public management, human potential management, strategic management, and organizational behavior.

Soft and Hard Management

At the Department of Management we conduct research related to both, soft and hard management, ensuring that all methodological and ethical standards are met, while implementing our department’s mission of “practicing management with a human face and managing in a humane way”. We share our research results with our students. Our research projects, both individual and conducted by research teams, receive funding from various public and non-public entities.

Unconventional Topics

We are not afraid to undertake topics considered unconventional for management science, in new organizational areas, such as new technology management, risk management, relations in organizations, management of memorial sites, migration management, human capital management related to intra-firm geographic mobility, and multicultural potential in companies.

Broad Perspective

We think about the future of organizations located in Central Europe, and especially Poland, including both businesses and a wide range of community organizations. The human potential in these entities will gradually become more and more diversified due to organizational goals, the growing international network involving the Polish economy, Poland’s social and historical past and its geographical location, as well as the processes of technologization. These factors mean that the human-technology relations will become increasingly present in organizations’ management strategies, and that companies, facing the reality of aging societies, will pay more attention to new dimensions of human, social, and psychological capital. All this is increasingly happening in the conditions of uncertainty, periods of suspension, unexpected turbulences, and changes in mode of action.

International Cooperation

The activities of the Department of Management are characterized by a high degree of program internationalization, research and teaching collaborations, and high quality of education.

Programs in English

The Department offers a unique Management and Leadership program in English that enjoys much popularity among international students from around the world, including countries such as: Afghanistan, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, China, Ecuador, Egypt, Georgia, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Myanmar, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United State, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, and Zimbabwe. To help students with integration and adaptation, the University organizes various multicultural invents, for example the “Orientation Week” and “International Days”, annual events that support networking and bonding between international students.

Practicums and Interships

Our teaching staff includes some foreign lecturers who complement our faculty with their extensive research and teaching experience. Furthermore, students have an opportunity to gain valuable experience abroad, at science and research centers, companies, museums, hospitals, libraries, and NGOs, during their internships.

Agreements with Universities Around the World

The Department has signed research, publication, and international exchange cooperation agreements with the best foreign universities located in Europe (Erasmus+) and beyond. Some of our partners include the following renowned universities: Tilburg University in the Netherlands – a leading social sciences research center that is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), which beside the Association of MBAs (AMBA), are the two out of three most prestigious accreditations awarded to business schools around the world, as well as the Arizona State University (USA) – the most innovative university in the United States (according to the U.S. News and World Report), which also holds the AACSB accreditation. Our program cooperation also extends to include the following universities: Universitat de Vic (Spain), Dalarna University (Sweden), Kwantlen Polytechnic University (Canada), and the University of Detroit Mercy (USA). Lecturers from our Department collaborate on various projects and publish together with scientists and authors from other countries.

Journey to Changemaker Certyficate

The quality of education delivered by our Management and Leadership program has been confirmed by the “Journey to Changemaker Certificate” (J2CC), awarded by Ashoka. The accreditation process was financed by the “Foreign Accreditations” granting scheme, provided by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Teaching

The Department of Management offers undergraduate and graduate studies in Management and Leadership in Polish and English.

Review our Programs in English:

Active learning

We are proponents of active learning implemented through experience and experimentation. We see ourselves more as guides in the field of business management rather than lecturers. We aim to inspire the process of learning rather than just transfer knowledge. Students learn through workshops, interactive seminars, case studies, group projects, discussions, debates and simulations.

Leading Change

We develop agency and self-confidence in our students, to enable them to positively impact the world around them in the future. Our study program has been awarded the “Journey to Changemaker Certificate” granted by an international foundation ASHOKA.

Tutoring Program

We offer our students an individual tutoring program throughout the duration of studies. We begin with an assessment of competencies and then we prepare a development plan together. We support our students in aligning their study path with individual predispositions and career plans. We advise students on their choices related to their education. Working with tutors helps students to better plan their activities and consciously pursue their goals.

Quality of our study programs

Three expert teams, which cooperate and complement each other, ensure the quality of teaching we provide. The teams include:

  • Methodology Team, coordinated by TBA
  • Organization and Management Team, coordinated by Professor Adam Szpaderski
  • Psycho-social Aspects of Management Team, coordinated by Dr. Magdalena Łużniak-Piecha

Student projects

Leadership LAB Project

The Leadership LAB Project is an initiative spearheaded by a team of researchers who are a part of the International Center for Research on Leadership, at SWPS University in Warsaw, interested in researching the Acts of Leadership model. This is an extracurricular project, comprising three linked modules, including development, education, and research.

leadership lab

Participants of the project mostly include students of Zarządzanie i Przywództwo and Management and Leadership programs at SWPS University, and students of other programs, such as psychology in business, cultural studies, journalism, design, computer technology, psychology, and doctoral students from SWPS University’s Doctoral School as well as students from other universities, who are interested in the topic of leadership. Thanks to such openness, diversity, and interdisciplinary character, project participants have an opportunity to share knowledge, experience, and support each other in development.

We offer various forms of participation in the project, such as development workshops, individual and group tutoring sessions, experimental sessions, work in project teams, open workshops, and a series of themed workshops. The key methodology that we employ during workshops is “Experiential Learning”.

The project provides students with an opportunity for development in three key areas:

  • developing personal potential (discovering creative talents and developing leadership potential)
  • expanding and deepening their knowledge related to various aspects of leadership (e.g. learning about the Acts of Leadership Model and the Leadership in Action concept)
  • conducting research experiments (such as testing new ideas and hypothesis, engaging in creative experimentation, formulating assumptions for future research projects as well as developing and implementing ideas for business, social, scientific, educational, creative, and technological projects).
