Linguistic Mediation in PracticePreliminary Research on the English Language Teachers’ Professional Competencies (Primary and Secondary Education in Poland)

The main goal of the project is to establish a baseline of current professional skills of English languages teachers in Polish primary and secondary schools. The baseline will provide a foundation for the reform of university level education of future English teachers.
The project is funded by the National Science Centre, project no. 27390.
Project objectives
To goal of the project is to carry out comprehensive preliminary research to assess the level of professional competence among teachers of English who work in primary and secondary schools in Poland. The results will provide a foundation for the reform of the university level education of future English teachers.
I will conduct an in-depth assessment to establish a baseline of current skills demonstrated by English teachers to assess the scope of adjustments needed at the all levels of university education (undergraduate, graduate, and the postgraduate) to improve the learning outcomes of future English teachers.
Methodology
During a two-phase study, the researcher will apply quantitative and qualitative research methods to gather data as follows:
- Phase I: quantitative study — online survey among 90 to 100 study participants
- Phase II: qualitative study — in-depth interviews with 30 participants selected from the survey responders.
Practical application of results
Once the data form the preliminary study is collected, the researcher intendents to apply for additional funding from the National Science Centre to continue to project and develop recommendations for the improvement of English teachers education at the university level.
