Unique Teaching Program
SWPS University’s Doctoral School - Our Difference

Doctoral education in fine arts and art conservation at SWPS University focuses on the relationship between theory and practice and draws upon the body of work accumulated by various disciplines and areas of art. Our goal is to create new knowledge on the foundation of project and art-oriented practice or search for new practical applications of the already existing knowledge. We specialize in developing, perfecting and describing methods, techniques, materials and various media.

Our goal is to educate and shape designers and artists who are able to carry out research on art and design, through art and design, or to meet the needs of art and design. According to the mission of our Institute of Design, we work with the society and for society, responding to the current needs, while thinking about tomorrow.

  1. Top specialists

As a doctoral candidate you will collaborate with acclaimed experts, who are recognized internationally – recipients of numerous awards, authors of publications, artist and designers who exhibited in the leading museums in Poland and across the world. Our team includes the following academics from SWPS University: Bartosz Mucha – who combines product design with sculpture, Karol Murlak – material and production process designer, Michał Jakubowicz – visual artist who specializes in photography, and Dariusz Vasina – an artist specializing in drawing, graphic design and illustration.

  2. Interdisciplinary approach

You will combine art and design with research. Therefore, your doctoral thesis will be developed under the supervision of a thesis advisor who represents the discipline of fine arts and art conservation, and an auxiliary thesis advisor who represents another selected discipline.

  3. Two-part doctoral thesis

At SWPS University, your doctoral thesis in the discipline of fine arts and art conservation will consist of a high quality project coupled with a related series of articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

  4. Funding for research-related activities

Doctoral students are eligible to receive funding for participation in conferences and other research-related activities deemed crucial for their doctoral research. You can also take advantage of various opportunities concerning collaboration with research centers abroad, which organize international conferences and symposia, and offer fellowships.

  5. Partnering with the European University Association (EUA)

We are a member of the European University Association (EUA), which represents more than 850 universities and national conferences of rectors in 49 European countries. EUA plays a key role in the Bologna process and influences EU policy on higher education, research and innovation. Through constant interaction with a range of other European and international organizations, EUA ensures that the independent voice of European universities is heard.

Three-Step Process

The pursuit of an external/extramural doctorate in fine arts and art conservation is a three-step process. The outcomes of each step are approved by the Scientific Board of the Institute of Design.

  1. Thesis outline and training

The first year is devoted to the development of a detailed outline of your doctoral thesis and acquiring knowledge and skills indispensable in completing the doctorate, which is done through lectures, workshops, training sessions, group meetings, and individual consultations with your thesis advisor.

  2. Creative process and research

During the second year you will focus on developing and presenting elements of your doctoral thesis to a wider audience and experts. You will exhibit your project, publish an article in a scientific journal, apply for a grant, and participate in an international scientific or artistic event.

  3. Presentation

The third and final step, which may take from 12 to 24 months, is devoted to perfecting your project as well as describing and presenting your efforts in a doctoral thesis.

Fees

Obtaining and external/extramural doctorate in the discipline of fine arts and art conservation is free of charge, however doctoral candidates who are not employed by SWPS University must pay the cost of the procedure for conferring a doctoral degree.
