What will you learn?

SWPS University is among top universities offering English Studies programs in Poland.

Use your undergraduate study time wisely and learn two languages at the same time. Our program — English Studies with an Additional Language — allows you to perfect your English and learn another language, such as Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, or Spanish, over the course of your studies. Choose one of these additional languages to complement your English and gain a competitive advantage on the job market.

During the course of study you will:

  • Rapidly improve your English skills to achieve CEFR C1 level, thanks to intensive practical language and grammar classes
  • Learn about linguistics, phonetics, and phonology
  • Read and analyze important works of English and American literature, culture, and history
  • Learn an additonal language at CEFR B2 level of competency or higher, which will position you well on the global job market
  • Practice your academic writing skills, which will also serve you well in creative or business-related professions
  • Use the latest Computer Assisted Translation Tools (CAT) and practice interpreting skills in a Simultaneous Interpretation Lab (translation specialization).

Focus on your interests

Towards the end of the first year, you will choose one of four specializations that will allow you to focus your interests and help to pursue your future career goals.

Please note: Each year the particular specializations are made available based on the number of declarations of choice submitted by students in the second semester. Therefore, we do not guarantee all specializations will be initiated for the year of your admission.

English teacher

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) – Teaching Track

TEFL specialization prepares students for a teaching profession in a variety of educational contexts, such as: different courses, tutoring, language schools, or in the longer perspective (of M.A. studies) public schools. Students become familiar with the theory and practice of TEFL also with the use of ICT based techniques. During teaching internships, under the guidance of a coordinator, students create their own European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages.

Cultural and Literary Studies – Cultural and Literary Track

This track is a chance to study in depth cultural and literary texts that have shaped and reflected the living reality of the English-speaking world. It teaches the tools and methodologies needed to understand and discuss complex phenomena, focusing on developing analytical and writing skills, and the ability to formulate coherent and convincing argumentation. Topics covered in our courses include, among others, popular culture, film, and interactive narratives, literary criticism and cultural theory. Perfect for those truly interested in cultures, histories, and complexities of the English-speaking world.

English for Business Environment – Business Track

English for Business Environment is focused on teaching business English with elements of economy, marketing and public relations. Students learn about organizational structure, business management, business environment and market issues. They also become familiar with the style of business writing and learn how to develop business plans, reports and business strategy. Moreover, they gain general business skills, such as presentation or negotiation skills and learn about business code of conduct.

Translation Studies – Translation Track (Polish/English Translation)

Translation Studies focus on translation theory and practice and on intensive language skills development. All courses are taught by experienced translators and linguists. Students become familiar with the requirements of general and specialized translation. They practice various translation methods and techniques employed in written and oral translation. All translation courses are developed in accordance with the guidelines of the European Union’s Directorate-General for Translation.
PLEASE NOTE: We focus on English to Polish and Polish to English translation, therefore you must be fluent in Polish to select this track.

Requirements

  • Secondary school/high-school diploma (translator-signed translation of the diploma into English or Polish is required if the diploma was issued in a language other than Polish, English, Russian, and Ukrainian).
  • Medical insurance policy or a declaration of enrollment in Poland's National Health Fund.
  • English proficiency certificate:
    • CEFR B2 (for a list of acceptable certificates please refer to the Documents Section to the right).
    • For holders of the Polish secondary school diploma (matura): basic level – minimum 90%, extended level – minimum 60%.
    • Holders of the so-called "polska stara matura" need the final grade 4 or higher on the diploma.
